I have a 2009 vibe 1.8 auto with 7,000 miles. I have not had the great gas mileage I have with my 04 with the same motor and trans. I have noticed that the 09 runs about 200 RPMs higher than the 04 at 70 mph under identical conditions. Whith the 04 I have to push nearly 80 mph to hit 3200 rpm. I have not been able to compare this with another 09 vibe . Can any one tell me if they have notice the same rpm levels at these speeds under normal conditions?I do have it in overdrive.

...at 75mph my 'base' 2009 Vibe with 1.8L 4-speed automatic and original P205/55R16 "Eagle" tires is turning about 3110 rpm....here's the equation:MPH = (60/(GEAR*AXLE))*(RPM/rev)MPH = (60/(0.700*4.237))*(2284/840) = 55 mphwhere:MPH = miles-per-hour60 = constant (min/hr)GEAR = 0.700:1 in 4th AXLE = 4.237:1 RPM = engine speed, rev-per-minrev = tire speed, rev-per-mile (840 for factory Goodyear Eagle, I called and asked them)....the transmission gear & axle numbers appear to be the same for 2004 (wifes' car) and 2009 (my car), so they should also apply to your car as long as it's NOT an AWD or GT model. That leaves only the tire/wheels as variables; both 2004 and 2009 have 16" rims.

The '09 1.8L is NOT the same engine as the '04 1.8L and I believe the '09 weighs +/- 400 lbs more than the '04 which would explain at least some of the mpg diff.

djb383 is 100% correct, the 1ZZ-FE 1.8L engine is totally different from current, new, 2ZR-FE 1.8L engine! The transmissions, however, seem to be identical....here's the differences between the two engines:1ZZ-FE = 1,794cc, bore 79.0mm x 91.5mm stroke; 130hp@6000 rpm, 125lb.ft@4200 rpm 2ZR-FE = 1,797cc, bore 80.5mm x 88.3mm stroke; 132hp@6000 rpm, 128lb.ft@4400 rpm...slightly bigger bore and slightly shorter stroke, which shows up as slightly more torque, but at a slightly higher rpm level.

This affectly lowered the rated power numbers of virtually all automobile engines. I'm sure the '09-'10 1.8L would be much closer to or potentially over 140hp if measured using the pre-'07 method.

...two questions: (1) what tire/wheel diameter? and (2) what axle and 5th gear ratio?...but, don't forget todays' 5-speeds typically have an "over-drive" ratio in 4th and 5th gears, something like 0.98:1 or something similar
