Intermittent CEL Code P0500 Part Deux

Recently my CEL light and ABS and Brake lights were coming on intermittently. My 04 Vibe only has 32,000 miles on it. Took it to dealer who said they and the Pontiac TAC team had never seen this problem before; however, they could repair the entire ABS and Traction control system to the tune of $2,020 plus what I'd already paid for diagnostics. Well, after some useless discussions with the Pontiac Customer Service people and reading these forums where I found this problem was not necessarily unknown, I decided to take the car for a second opinion to a local mechanic who said it was probably the speed sensor. Since the speedometer had seemed to be a bit wonky, I had him replace the speed sensor which seems to have cleared up the problem.Dealer estimate: $2020Local Mechanic: $184.00 + $65.00 labor + diagnosticsWhile I was at it, I asked him to replace the cabin air filter. Dealer price: $90.00, local mechanic: $42.00, fair enough for me since this grammy isn't all that mechanically inclined and didn't really want to do this task myself. Makes you wonder.

Hopefully your experience will help someone else witht he same problems. That is quite a difference in cost. Congratulations to you on getting the second opinion. Sounds like you found a good shop.
