What will the next NUMMI product be?

Saw this article, looks like GM is trying to find something they can get out of NUMMI: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-1....htmlNear the end a GM flack gave an interesting quote: "There's really nothing wrong with the Vibe," Hopson said. "Its only problem right now is that it is a Pontiac."It still puzzles me that they didn't move it to another line. As the article points out it leaves a hole in their offerings. I guess it depends what Toyota wants. If they're happy with the Matrix they could find a new joint venture. I just don't know what else in the Toyota lineup GM would like to have that could be built at that plant.

from what i understand they (GM) will continue to talk to Toyota and see if they can work something with Buick, Caddy, or just go with Chevy.

They may try to adapt the Toyota hybrid Prius. The GM name could be 'PrayForUs'

Latin for "pray for us" is "Ora pro nobis". It is the chanted response to the Catholic litany of the saints. When I was a kid I thought they were singing "old rotten donuts". So my nomination for the name of this new model is "Old rotten donuts".

I have no idea what will actually show up at NUMMI in the future, but I'd love to see Toyota come up with a Hybrid Synergy Drive to fit in the Corolla platform, and see it transplanted in to the Corolla, Matrix and some kind of Chevy or Buick car built at NUMMI.GM really needs a small hybrid, even if it's just to gain a little positive press, and have something get to market quickly (unlike the Volt, which has taken far too long to get out there).

Well according to one report it looks like it may be a hybrid built at NUMMI:http://gm-volt.com/2009/05/25/...to-gm/

they say the matrix is built at nummi in the article and we know thats wrong. so how much of the article could be right?

If I had a quarter for every journalist who mistakenly thought the matrix was built in California, I'd be a rich man.

I know this is somewhat off-topic but the Chevy Cruize is coming out soon. I can see it being a 5 door to take the place of the Vibe in GM's lineup. Not the same frame as the Corolla or Matrix but it might be a logical transition for the Vibes styling. And with some retooling, maybe the Cruize can come out of NUMMI.

Yes, the Cruze is to be built at Lordstown. My guess is the next thing that comes from NUMMI is something with a really crappy paint job.

I’m guessing no on that, DavidPIL. First, the Cruze is a second generation offshoot of the Suzuki Swift. Second, my understanding is the Cruze is supposed to replace the Cobalt, & GM is supposed to start Cruze production at the Lordstown plant (currently makes the Cobalt & Pontiac G4/G5). Of course, I am assuming GM survives bankruptcy….

A Vibe inspired CruzeCross/UTE. A tall wagon version of the regular sedan that gets great fuel mileage. Might work. NUMMI could do it. And they can continue to spray the exterior metal parts with that diluted water base paint they already use. Toyota could also build a pretty nice version of the Suzuki based vehicle for itself, too. Only this time, if I were Toyota, I would hire the ex Pontiac stylists to do the body on their version of the car.

As it stands now, their stylists need to go to fricken rehab as they keep churning out cracked out design after cracked out design with a face that even a mother couldn't love... *cough* Venza *cough* These new Toyotas are just awful... (IMHO of course. )

in the contract the UAW just voted on states that GM will retool an idled plant for a capacity of 160,000 units annually. the units produced will be versions of compact and small cars that are not produced at any other U.S. facility at that time. there wasn't anything about NUMMI. I still think the venza is the replacement of the matrix in the line-up after 2010. never know though maybe a Chevy 5 door.

I never had any paint issues with my Neptune Blue 2003 that I had for 6 years. Perhaps the dirt I let accumulate had a protective effect.

I've read many posts on this forum mentioning displeasure with Vibe paint quality and how easy it damages.Mine is still too new for me to tell if the paint is good or bad. Looks good so far.
