My car is an '05 Vibe, 5 speed with about 70k miles on it. I just noticed in fifth gear that I get a dull buzz/vibration coming from the center of the car under acceleration. The noise goes away if you touch the shifter handle, but comes back when you let it go, and I don't feel any odd vibrations in the handle. It also goes away if you press the clutch pedal in.So, what could be causing a buzz in the shifter handle, only in fifth gear, and only when the engine is under load? Any thoughts?
I can't think of anything that would cause that, that would go away when you touch the shifter. How firmly to you need to touch the shifter to make the noise go away?
Doesn't take much, really. Just a little push either forward, left or right. It's not any more bothersome than any other of my vibrations, except that I know what makes this one stop and I don't want to have my hand on the shifter all the time.
I know this is an old thread that I started a long time ago, but just in case anybody else notices this noise, turns out it was a bearing in my 5-speed transmission beginning to go out. I ended up driving it for another 30k miles until the noise got much louder, then replaced the 5-speed with a 6-speed.
