Does anyone know if the Vibe/Matrix have a check engine light that automatically comes on after XXX miles? My friend has a Jetta, and the CEL is "scheduled" to come on at various mileage intervals so that the car can be checked out by the dealer periodically.Anyway, my CEL came on yesterday (9200 miles). I've read about checking the gas cap. Car seems to be running fine. Any thoughts?

I don't think the Check Engine Light is schelduled to come on at a mileage interval. I never saw that...You possibly have a problem but you can read your manual from page 2-68 to 2-71. A PDF version is there:
http://www.mygmlink.com/pdf/go2content/ ... 03vibe.pdf. The light can be on for much more reasons and it can turn off after a few driving if it was not a major problem.Just read the manual and if you're not sure of what happened, go to your dealer to have it checked.Good luck!

Dealer told me to make sure the engine is turned OFF when you refuel, because the vacuum in the gastank recirculation hose sucks too much and sets the CEL sensor off. If so it should turn off in a few hundred miles....Of course, I would stop and turn the engine off immediatly and check all my fluids to make sure nothing else is really wrong....

Yep, first thing the dealer told me to check was the gas cap. If the light doesn't turn off in a couple days, I'll take it in to get it checked out. I'm sure it's something insignificant. Car seems pretty reliable to far.

I had the check engine cel on a while ago. The service guy told me to check the gas cap, as 30% of check engine cell on are due to the gas cap. I crank up the gas cap and the check engine light turned off 5 mins after. Also, he told me if the check engine turn on and stay on, you can go the the dealer to have it checked. If the cell starts flashing, stop the car right away and call a towing to bring it to the dealer.

Usually if your check engine light comes on the gas cap wasn't put on tightly enough for the tank to get the correct vacuum pressure. Your light will stay on for the three cycles of the computer and then if it doesn't see that there is a problem then it turns off the CEL. It's happened to alot of people. In fact, it happened to me when I first bought my Acura. It only had 800 miles on it and the CEL came on so I called the dealership and that's what they told me.Hope this helpsShadow Realm
