Since we're getting widespread temperatures below -25 I thought I toss out a reminder. Even though most folks around here are pretty competent owners. Many cars have the coolant temperature set for -25 °F and many auto service centers set the temperature there by default. Also sometimes people add water over the summer and forget to re-winterize the coolant in the fall. If you've already checked, then please disregard this message.

oh yes those racers that go mostly water need to remember to put coolant back in...ive heard some horror stories :/

Great tip - that's one that's easy to miss.

Great idea for the reminder - Mine was checked before winter and it is good to -40°F. So I'm safe. Thankfully, our cold spell is ending and we'll be in the +30°'s next week. Looking forward to the heat wave (50° increase)...lol.

Good idea. I haven't checked either one of our cars. The coldest it's been is zero-ish though.The VIbe just had a coolant flush in the fall so I'm sure it's alright. The Hyundai is another story, it's on 47,000 mile old coolant and I haven't ever tested it. I lost my coolant tester and haven't bought another one. It's probably OK - getting a flush done at the next oil change anyway.

I thought of it, but never did check this week. Fortunately no issues with the Vibe registering -22 three different mornings this week.

I have a buddy who is not a car guy and he cracked his block the beginning of the winter because his water pump was leaking and he got tired of putting coolant in and just put water in. He brought it to me to fix about a week too late. It was an older Z24 Cavalier not a Vibe.
