Check Engine Light - P0171

Post by NibCrom »

My CEL has been going on and off for the past week or so. It only seems to come on after I've parked it outside for a while. Occasional rough idle. Not sure I want to replace the oxygen sensor if that is not the problem. Thoughts?

http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171It could be a vacuum leak or dirty MAF sensor. I would check all your hoses first and clean your MAF sensor before replacing the 02 sensor.

How do I clean the MAF sensor and where is it located on the Vibe?

Run a tank or two of Techron injector cleaner. Not STP, not Goldbloom and Finch, Techron only. In my 5 + years of Vibe ownership the injectors seem to be easily fouled and that code comes up on occassion. Now I just run a tank of Techron at each oil change.

Cleaned the MAF sensor. Check engine light is gone. Seems like a good fix for the P0171 cel code. Thanks guys!

Well I spoke too soon. The light is back. I guess I'll try cleaning the MAF sensor again and then run some Techron, although in the past that stuff hasn't helped me any.

So far the Techron is actually working. I'll see if it lasts.

If the light comes back, try checking for a vacuum leak, seeing how you can only clean the MAF sensor so much before it actually does get clean. Or you could easily go to a dealer and have them diagnose it for you if you feel a bit nervous about the code.

If CEL (P0171) comes on during subfreezing temps and accompanied by rough idle, problem could be leaking intake manifold gasket. Dealer should cover repairs under TSB...http://toyota.justanswer.com/u...1.pdf

He'd better hope his car has less than 36,000 miles, otherwise they won't cover it....and an intake manifold gasket isnt bad...if it was the intake manifold itself then that would be something I'd wanna take care of immediately.
