Illogical Pricing Difference

Pontiac Dealer Ad Ad in todays paper - 2009 Vibe MSRP $17,245$16,726 without current lease#14,726 with current lease**must have lease from any manufacturer ending on or before 6-30-09, Need Not Trade. So - it appears that if you have any leased car with lease ending on or before 6-30-09 you can get a $2,000 better price on a new Vibe.Does that make any sense?I have seen similar ads for other GM models - sometimes the difference is only $1,000, sometimes $3,000. On the Pontiac G6 it is a $3,000 difference; Buick Enclasve $1,000; Lucerne $2,000. Sierra Crew Cab $1,000.

Don't know, but it doesn't sound that different from assorted 'loyalty' and 'conquest' deals I've seen in the past. AIRC, when we bought one of out Vibes we got about 1000 off if we could show ownership of another GM car (our Chevy Nova/Corolla qualified); when buying the second Vibe they had some deal if you owned another brand of vehicle (our Toyota Camry qualified).

I never quite understood the loyalty and/or conquest rebates either. However, they seem to have some rational basis - e.g. we're going to give you an extra benefit (rebate) becaue you are loyal to us, or we are going to give you an extra benefit (rebate) to get you to switch to us from another car company. With this latest deal they are rewarding a buyer because in the past they leased as opposed to buying for cash cash or financing. That makes as much sense as rewarding someone because their birthday is on the 15th of the month. Oh well, if GM were that smart they wouldn't be on the brink of bankruptcy.

What's not to understand? GM says "Meet these conditions and get a rebate". It's about marketing and trying to get people to come buy a new vehicle. It's like the grocery store that jacks their prices up and then offers a "club card" so you can get the lower prices. It's psychological, if people think they are getting a deal, they will buy.Nothing to not understand there.

If they really wanted to get people to come and buy they would offer the $2,000 to everyone - but maybe they don't want THAT MANY people to buy at THAT PRICE.Another angle - perhaps the $2,000 is the key to getting people to terminate their lease early. It still seems like a strange promotion.

They want to get to the people who are leasing and can nolonger get a lease from current car Co.
