the defrost for the rear window or front? rear should turn off after a certain amount of time. the front will stay on till you switch it to a diff area

Haven't had occasion to leave it on very long in our Vibes yet. But in our other cars the rear electric defroster stays on until you either turn it off or turn off the car. I assumed the Vibe would act similarly.

yup, the 09 vibe wont turn off till you switch it off. not used to it since previous cars i've had would turn off on its own as soon as it's warm. oh well

That's how it works in our '06 - so even if you forget to turn it off manually it wouldn't stay on for more than a few hours until you stop for gas/food/RR/etc. I don't see how that would do any harm other than wasting a bit of electricity and therefore burning a tiny bit more gas than necessary.

Hi,Would not those heating lines or elements burn out faster than if it shuts off when the window is warm enough???Anton

It's not like those wires get white hot like the filament in light bulbs - and even those take a long time to burn out. The rear defroster is more likely to eventually break due to mechanical damage, not because of the electrical current when in use.

I think I remember reading in the manual that it doesn't shut off until you shut it off. I believe it even stays on thru off/on cycles of your ignition.I think it's strange too, it has shut off automatically on every car I've owned. I have been annoyed on a few of my cars though when the timer is too short, and I have to keep turning it back on. Maybe constant-on is a good thing.... I'm just not used to it.

the rear defrost turns off when the car turns off and then have to turn it back on if needed (05 base vibe)
