Man, that's a really good deal! I just checked out the equipment list for the first time, even the basic Astra has a lot of nice features. If only I were in the market too...

If I needed a new economical car, the Astra would be right there at the top of my test drive list. And that's a great price for a very good car. http://www.autoblog.com/2008/0...astra/

Buy a Vette or Mustang or some other SPORTS car if you want that. I love how standard family sedans *NEED* 200+ HP nowadays. It's not an economical affordable hatchback anymore at that point!/rant

They had to find something to complain about because it's an American car.

I am aware, but it's essentially made by an American-based company and sold in America by an American brand. Many journalists are biased against American cars nowadays.

Test drove a 5 door Astra XR this weekend. It's a very solid car. Build quality is excellent. The steering is spot on. It goes exactly where you point it. I wasn't able to find any torque steer during my test drive. Power is on par with the Vibe. The automatic 4speed is smooth as butter. One touch down for all window controls. The seats where bolstered nicely on the 5-door XR, and are even bigger (better) on the 3-door. The radio was okay, and only one "front" cup holder, but these minor issues I can handle. I want one.

When I bought my Vibe a few months ago, I narrowed my list of potential vehicles down to 3: Saturn Aura, Saturn Astra, Vibe. (I had $2500 in GM Card $, so I was pretty much focused on GM's)The Astra is a really fun car to drive. The manual trans is much better than the Vibe manual IMHO. The car felt very light and responsive (although the Vibe 1.8 and Astra 5 door are very close in Curb Weight) .... I wasn't a fan of the interior (I thought it was cheap), and it was pretty small on the inside, especially the space behind the backseats when the seats are up. With the seats down, max. cargo capacity for the Astra is 12.2 cubic Feet while the Vibe has over 20.1.At the time I was shopping, they weren't offering many incentives on the Astra, so it was about the same price as a Vibe, and the Vibe came with more stuff. If you can get a good deal on one, lcan live with a little less space, and appreciate crisp handling I think the Astra is a good choice.

Cd Player is in a weird position. Anyone try to use the front/rear wipers with that stalk? Unique I do say.

Quote, originally posted by Jeremy96gase »only one "front" cup holderBooooooo! I read that in a review last week. I need at least 2 for myself most times so this is a deal breaker for me! That kind of thing may slide with Europeans, but over here they better be adding more cup holders! At least add bottle holders in the door pockets if they aren't going to do anything with the console. This Astra's on its way out anyway, maybe when the new one comes out this serious design flaw will be addressed.

Cupholders are definetly overlooked in many european cars. (don't they have starbucks over there?). That being said, my '09 Vibe only has one honest cup holder if you ask me. It has bottle holders in the doors, but if you and a friend buy a coffee, the passenger is holding theirs or it will definetly spill.

Cupholders? Do I give a ----- about cupholders? The ones in the vibe are too small anyway.
