Fuel pump running when car is off

I just noticed when going back to get something out of the car tonight that there was a whirring noise coming from under the rear driver's side of my 2007 Vibe, which had been off for about 4 hours. It was coming from the area just behind the left rear wheel which houses some wiring and what appears to be the fuel pump. I can't imagine what else it could be back there. I then put the key in the ignition and turned accessory power on, then off, and the sound went away. Has anyone else had this problem? Wondering if I should push for a new fuel pump altogether when I take it in. I don't want the thing running all night and killing both the battery and the fuel pump life.2007 Vibe5 speed MT, ABSSun & Sound

I am thinking the tank is venting pressure; other Toyota's do this, but I am not sure if the Vibe does.

The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. What you saw was probably the charcoal canister. It might be that there is a vacuum pump somewhere, and it was setting a vacuum on the tank as part of the evaporative emissions control. maybe. something to ask about the next time you take it in

Is it really normal for the car to be doing this 4 hours after it is turned off if that is the case?

It is an emissions-related thing and is normal.I noticed that they started attaching a notice tag to the shifter on new Vibes back in '05 (and still do to this day) that said there will be some sound briefly coming from the rear of the car within a few hours after the engine has been turned off. I think it's doing an evaporative emissions check if I recall correctly.EDITYou can find this info if you go to the "Getting to know your 2007 Vibe" PDF file. It is described on page 12.Quote »EVAP Leak Detection PumpYour Vibe is equipped with a vacuum pump for the vehicle's fuel evaporation system. This pump performs a fuel evaporation leakage test approximately five hours after the engine is turned off. You may hear a sound coming from underneath the rear cargo compartment for several minutes. The noise is normal and does not signify a malfunction.
