Chevy Aveo 5 (Can the new redesign compete?)

It has been redesigned, but can it now compete with the Fit, Versa, Yaris crowd? Here are some stats and in my opinion, its a total winner, can't wait for a new comparo on them all.1) It starts at just a hair over $12,000. A Bargain even in this crowd.2) Features On Star which the others do not have3) Available with perforated Leatherett (close to leather as you can get in this segment)4) Oil life monitor5) XM radio6) 5yr. 100k coverage (better than the others offer)

The redesign definitely looks a lot better! Is it wrong that I kinda like it? I don't think that I could ever buy one... unless they came out with a SS version... that would be nice... ok now I'm just dreaming...

Beleive it or not, I like it enough that I would get that over the new '09 Vibe...

34mpg is the estimate, here is a pic of what an SS would look like. Dual exhaust, bigger wheels, even a Cadillac CTS vent on the side

It would probably utilize their 1.4L Ecotec turbo w/ 180hp. That would be slick.

It's already out for 2008, just came out actually. Not the SS that is, just the new Aveo. The headroom in them is supposed to be very good, comparable to what was in the Suzuki Aerio's I would imagine since it has a high roofline like the other small guys.

It's funny you brought this up.I saw a Pontiac wave that looked just like the SS yesterday, had duals and the body kit on it.Looked OK.Had to take a second look to see what it was.

The new one, already looks very "cobalt"My GF now owns an Aveo, and now after some time with it... well, I like parts of it, other things about it I just can't stand... Suspension: horrible as one would expect for the money, but the big problem comes with trying to get new struts/shocks.. (struts front, shocks rear) It's easy to get the rears, but the fronts.. like pulling teeth.. Tranny: the manual shifter is like shifting silly puddy, feels connected with a rubber band, same with the motor mounts.. I think they were trying to inprove overall smoothness, but REALLY went overboard.. Those are my biggest gripes... The motor: It actually makes DECENT power, 1.6l that you can rev FOREVER, the problem is, it takes forever to rev it out... BUT, for that sized car, it does make decent power... (we will see what an intake and exhaust does to it in the spring)One of the tuner mags, Super Street IIRC has had an on going segment where a company has built a full "time attack" Aveo, around a Cobalt SS motor (S/C version) Haven't seen anything on it since the last installment when they finished it up... I guess if they did come out with a Aveo SS, it would be quite hot, but there is almost ZERO aftermarket support, oddly enough, there is a body kit for it though..

Chevy has an interesting program going on to showcase the Aveo5. They're sending Aveo5s outfitted like cabs to college campuses around the country and giving free rides to students there. The students are filmed while in the car. Great shots of the Aveo5 interior can be seen in the videos! To view the hilarity and check out the Aveo5, visit

The biggest problem with the Aveo is the fuel economy. The Aveo's 1.6L engine uses almost as much fuel as the Cobalt'S 2.2L. The Aveo also has the biggest fuel consumption in the sub-compact segment. As recently graduated students a lot of my friends still have Aveos and Cobalts on loans and no matter which one we use for roadtrip/vacations, we use pretty much the same quantity of fuel. The car hidden under the sheetmetal is a modified Deawon Lanos. GM rebranded the engine as an Ecotec and added a few belts and whistles and the overall quality of the car has improved a lot but the core architecture remains. The Aveo is still sell under the Deawoo name in Europe.

If I'm not mistaken, Pontiac is coming out with a G3 which looks very much like an Aveo, but with better Pontiac looks of course. They have little information on it as of right now, but it is on their page under Future Vehichles. I think it will def sale a lot better than the Aveo.

its still that crappy daewoo. crappy car, crap engine. Even CR reported its not even fit to be used as standard car. My roommate test drove one and hated it and bought a hyundia. I wouldnt touch that with my enemies bank account Theres better "bang for your buck" cars out and my ms3 gets the same or better gas mileage.

I agree with you that they are crap. I test drove an Aveo when they first came out just for the fun of it and I was pretty much laughing the whole time bc of how much of a joke it is. Now the G3 I believe will sell more units, mainly bc of the Pontiac styling, but yes, nothing will take away from the fact that it is a crappy car.

That car looks pretty sharp. I'd probably get it over a Fit any day.

I don't mind the looks of the new Pontiac version, I actually prefer it to the Chevy. I hate that new Chevy front-end. The G3 looks like a baby first gen Vibe. If they'd only lose the pimp daddy gangsta fake chrome port holes. The new ones seem to be outfitted pretty nice as far as equipment goes. But I'll stick with my Hyundai Accent... If your're going to settle for a cheap, disposable Korean transportation appliance, might as well buy something with a little better quality.
