Bypass or remove AC pump to increase mpg, anyone done it?

On my last car a 2001 Taurus the AC pump froze up and I went the cheap route and installed a bypass pulley. The guy at Advanced Auto said this would increase my mpg, by making it easier on the engine since the pump is activated even when the heat is turned on. Is this true, or would simply disconnecting the electrical plugs to the pump do the same thing.Where I live AC isn't really needed, sad but true.

just hit the ac button on the dashboard to turn off the ac when your in defrost mode or you can pull the dash panel around the radio bezel and pull the wire so it don't turn on automaticaly

The advanced auto dude is a dumb a$$........when the compressor is off, there's NO LOAD on the engine. Leave it like it is and just turn it off.
