Has 185k miles, has had a minor brake squeak from the rear 10-0mph since... forever? Dealer's looked a few times, cleaned/adjusted the drums etc never with resolution.Since this is my winter beater now and the gf's got a new Mazda3, I figured i'd investigate it myself.I removed the rear drum and noticed while the shoes have a ton of material left, there's a vertical line in the brake shoe that runs in the center end-to-end of the shoe, and it's etching into the drum, which I suspect is what's making the squeak... is this some time of wear indicator? There's way too much material left for it to be i'd think, either way shoes are cheap, i'll replace them, just wondered if anyone's ever seen this

It's not an issue, or a wear indicator... It is prolly due to the manufacturing process and that part of the shoe is harder... you could try taking it down with some sandpaper if you really wanted.. but I wouldn't worry much..
