After a repair is made do you have to get the check engine light reset?

Typically, a service technician will reset the codes after they perform the repair, but often times, they clear the codes right after they read them. For a fuel filler cap issue, once corrected, it would reset the light after 3 driving cycles.Out of curiousity, what caused you to keep the car running while filling the tank? I don't know that I've ever seen anyone actually do it, but it doesn't seem like a good idea.

Thanx for the info. Agreed, it's not a good idea. I was next in line at my usual gas station with my tank door open. While moving up to the pump the service attendent took the cap off and he started filling up my tank. Just at that moment the engine was trying to stall. I guess being that I frequent the same station they know what I get everytime. I told them they should wait until the car is stopped and off.
