yup. this is the main reason i've hated SUV's since they have started to appear. waaayyy back in 01 a friend and i were in an accident with an suv. we were stopped at a green light cause the person in front didn't wanna go but the suv behind us decided to start creeping up, into the trunk of my friend's taurus. damage to the taurus? broken trunk, broken driver brake light. i don't know the exact cost of it but i think he needed a completely new trunk and latching assembly. damage to the suv? plastic plate holder got bent a bit.i've even have heard 1st person recollections of people seeing a suv sliding over a car and then flipping in the air. but this isn't true with all mini vans and such. we have a 98 dodge caravan and it has the same height bumper as my vibe and the buick we have. also had 87 econoline with the same hight bumper as cars(know this cause it was in an accident with a car and only the bumper needed to be replaced), so why do these suv's need the extra height? to have a commanding view of the road? the econoline had a high seat too so i have no idea.

well considering the suv as we know it is in a death knell in a way it is moot, but its exactly as the propaganda pointed out if you were in a "mere" automobile then you would be pummeled when struck by an suv, the solution, buy an suv. only now with gas 4 times the cost when the majority of suv's came into being many are beginning to rethink things a bit.If it were not for the fact, that families are going to get stuck with these vehicles, until their useful lifetime is over, I would suggest charging a premium to own an suv at least thorough the insurance agencies.Just makes us hope that all that CUV propaganda toyota put out on the matrix doesn't turn into them penalizing us for it.

Sorry that happened to you - ouch. Thanks for the link - interesting. The pictures and crash costs really make it clear. Seems like autos should all be required to have bumpers at the same height to decrease the cost of auto insurance and increase safety.

You weren't dumb, just careless. You think you're the only one who hit something because you weren't paying attention? I took a step bumper off my Explorer pulling away from a gas pump. You know how they place metal poles in the concrete so you can't hit the pump, I hit that pole. Cost me $$ to fix it.
