And my new 2009 Vibe

I am new to this forum, but was reading it daily for about a year. I was considering buying a Vibe for about two years but held off until the redesign. I was not happy with the 2006-2008 front nose job. However I like the 2009 front grill alot but I like the old rear hatch door. But I needed a new car for a long time and I wanted a small car with a hatchback and a sport style. My old car is a 1988 Daytona. I took ownership of my new Vibe in June.

I want to thank all of you for your interest. I ordered basic the silver vibe color. I wanted the roof rack and the Alum. wheels. Being that the roof rack only comes in a alum finish, the silver will blend it in. In order to get the rack and the alum wheels, you must order the 2.4L engine. as far as I know as of this date. I am an automatic man. I have two questions..... Can any of you measure the horizontal width and diagonal clear opening of the older model Vibe rear hatch door i.e. the max. clear dimensions? I like to compare it to the 2009 model. I have 42 inches wide and 44 inches diagonally. I forgot what I measured a few years old.My second question is that I hear alot about getting a lag delay in acceleration from a stop with the 2.4L engine. I also have this issue. I have to press the pedal a little hard to get it to move. I like the car's quiet interior sound and am surprise of the smoother ride I get riding over major rough road surfaces. Any comments?

Ive got the 2.4 but, with manual trans. I haven't noticed any lag at all when pressing the gas. There should be other 2.4 automatic vibe owners who could give you more feedback on that. From my experience, that 2.4 engine seems to be very refined(at least when compared to the engines in older cars I've had). I hope that lag is something they can fix.Good luck!

Hey Ivibe, I've clocked about 2000 miles on my 09 2.4l automatic 5 speed vibe. There is a lag in acceleration from stop.

I want to thank you for your thoughts about my new car. Since no one so far has answered my request about the dimensions of rear hatch opening, could your please do so, thank you. I would like to know the widest clear horizontal width and the widest diagonal clear width of the rear opening ( between the plastic trim ) of the older Vibe model.Thank you.

Welcome to the site. My hatch is 44" wide at the widest point and 47" across at the biggest diagonal (I've got an '05).

Thanks for the information. The new model (which I now own) has a 42 inch clear width and 44 inches diagonally. I thought the older one had a bigger opening. I was hoping for a larger opening in the 2009. I wanted a clear hatch opening to fit a 48 inch plywood in it.... 4x4 foot sheet size but also in a small car hatchback. I never wanted to buy a truck or an big SUV. I added the roof rack in hopes that I can place the plywood up there and bring it home from the Depot. Thanks again

I believe that a scion xB has a significantly larger cargo hold. It is basically the same mechnicals as the Vibe 2.4 The car is not as long and doesnt have the plastic seat backs but the cargo hold is something like 70ft^3 opposed to roughly 50ft^3 for the vibe.
