if you have zonealarm's firewall on your system and updated on tuesday and are now having troubles accessing the internet (as i was until i was testing and found the problem) the powers that be have fixed the issue. more information can be found here http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2...sed/1 .here are the links to the fixes. the short of it is to first uninstall the windows update then update the firewall, and then reinstall the windows update. so because of this issue, i'm now looking for a new firewall. what do you all recommend? i was planning on taking an old computer and putting FreeBSD on it and making it into a firewall before the router and turning it into a switch and doing that. but i figure i'll still need another firewall on the local systems too. while i do prefer free stuff, i'm also willing to pay a bit of money but not too much for a good software firewall. i hope you all didn't have this problem too.

I used to use ZoneAlarm but after upgrading to Vista over a year ago, I haven't reinstalled any firewall software --- no issues yet...Of the big 3, I prefer TrendMicro..

I recently lost my Vista computer to installing the updates...!!!!! Yeah, i'm not happy about it one bit... It was all of 6mo old... The back story.... My GF, she's new to credit and all, so she decided that she was going to RENT(to own) a desktop, to both have a computer (we didn't have one at the time) and to help build her credit... So, she rented this Everex pile of crap.... Vista system, details elude me right now, but not that great...We got ourselves on the net finally and I thought it would be a good idea to DL any and all updates for Vista and get that done.. I did the DL, 15 updates, 9 of them installed properly, 6 failed.. So I re-DLed them and started the installThis is when I started down the sprial.... Something was corrupt or had some serious issues during install, I got error messages, it prompted me to do a quick "recovery" (Understand I know enough to get myself in trouble, not a lot more) Well, the recovery failed, then more errors came up and in the end, It was telling me that I needed to reinstall Vista...WTFTurn out the Wesrtern Digital HDD, decided to crash on me..??? this was found out after trying different HDD's and even buying an external case, so I could try and put our drive on another computer to run it as a slave... No luck, all my stuff is sitting there, locked inside this chunk of metal, with me looking at 300$ MINIUM for a HDD recovery... Vista = teh suck...

I use Jetico firewall. It's free! You need to alow it to learn what programs you will alow access to the internet. This is where your computer knowledge comes into play. I run jetico firewall and AVG virus protection. I also run teatimer from spybot search and destroy. In combo with those three programs I have never had a virus.

I have heard that the firewall in VISTA itself is pretty good.
