In a short time I'll be going on a cruise in Alaska.I have a laptop and a GPS receiver that plugs into a usb port. I will not have any internet access while abord the boat.I thought it would be fun to do a bit of gps tracking with my laptop while aboard. But I would need some sort of software that would use the GPS signal to map where i am and going. Out on the Ocean I doubt street map software will work very well.Could some one recomend such a software (preferably free) that I could use. It would not need to be graphically rich or anything just something to plot on a map where I am and going.I found the Google Earth can do this with an add on, but It would require internet access that I will not have. Thanks!

I meant to reply to this.A guy from work did this, not sure what he used,or if it was free or not,but I know he talked about it.I'll talk to him,but he's only in on Wednesdays. He dabbles in radios as a hobby.

I wouldn't rule out the street map software such as DeLorme's StreetAtlas or Microsoft Streets. They should still show where you are relative to the shoreline and any islands, peninsulas, etc. You can probably pick up an older version very inexpensively and it would be just as good since the physical features don't change in a few years.I use my Garmin GPS with their "MetroGuide" mapping software when I'm kayaking far away from any 'metro' area. It even shows navigational bouys and lights out on the ocean and the locations of old ship wrecks.
