1.8 liter Engine Oil Capacity - Is 4.0 qts too much?

What's the story on the 3.9 quart engine oil capacity listed in the 2004 owner's manual? Since I didn't feel like wasting a kitchen measuring cup to shave off the last tenth of a quart, I went ahead and put 4.0 qts full of Castrol Syntec in the crankcase. Can I get away with loading a shade too much oil without breaking the engine?

Should not be a problem - an extra qt may be too much, but 3.2 oz - no problem

i put 4 qts in to my 1.8 1zz engine with out issue. that last .1of a qt gets sucked up by the new oil filter anyways.

Don't you think that GM was smart enough to compensate for the "getting sucked up by the new filter" when they said 3.9 qts ?

I use 3.5 quarts. I pour it, run it a bit, then add the last half a quart.
