So, the venerable F150 is toppled at last, by Japanese branded small(er) cars. But to call the Matrix a Corolla Wagon?I don't know about you, but I don't think of the Vibe as a wagon.Crossover? Consumer Utility Vehicle? Tall Sedan? They all sound kind of sterile. This is a wagon:http://img.photobucket.com/alb...9.gifand this as a family sedan/kid hauler/grocery getter:http://smg.photobucket.com/alb...9.gif

I call it a hatchback since the space behind the back seat isn't as long as the rest of the interior if that makes any sense at all...If the space behind the back seat is longer than like 4 feet it's a wagon...

I call it a wagon, that way tint laws in MN don't apply as they do for a Car... SUV's and wagons can have darker than 50% tint on the back windows.. Cars can only have 50%.

It's certainly not a sedan, as it has no extended trunk. It's certainly not a coupe, as it has four doors. Convertible, truck, are easily eliminated.I wouldn't call it a van or an SUV as it's not large enough (in my mind, those should have 3 rows of seats or a body on frame construction). So that leaves us with Wagon or Hatchback. It's just semantics. I'd prefer my insurance company to classify it as a wagon, but I generally refer to it as a hatchback to my friends. I think that may also have something to do with living in California, where hatchback VW and Hondas have been around for years, so people are used to that term. I referred to a Vibe as a hatchback to my cousins who live in TN, and they had no idea what I was talking about. Wagon seemed much more on their spectrum.

prius is a 4-door fastback/liftback/whatever it isI call the vibe a 4-door hatchback or a sport wagon. The back end isn't long enough to be a regular wagon. The Caliber/Mazda3/Fit/etc fall into the 4-door hatchback category too.

Embrace the wagon. Do not deny who you are. Acceptance will free your troubled soul.

Compact station wagons have been declining since the 2000s although 2003 saw the introduction of the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe. sorry you own a Station Wagon.

I don't really care from as status standpoint if it is a wagon or a hatchback. I owned a Sable wagon, and have T&C minivan. The ford escort had wagons thru 1999, and hatchbacks thru 1996 at the same time as wagons. To me, the shortened tail excludes it from being a wagon. Pontiac called it a sports wagon to evoke SUV association, and avoid the dreaded hatch word, which was verbotin in 2003. With $4.00 gas, hatches are back, and we are on the advanced guard.
