the serpentine belt on our 03? It has 71,000 miles on it, and I noticed several small cracks on the grooved side last night. We're going on vacation (road trip) on the 14th, and I don't want to have to worry about it. I've read all the threads about how easy it is to replace. The manual says we should have 'checked' it at least a couple of times by now. Thanks

Yup, I would get a Goodyear Gatorback replacement belt. You should be able to get it at most hardware stores.

It's low cost peace of mind. Replace it, throw the old one under the rear deck in case of emergency .

Thanks, that's why I asked. Gatorbacks are $21.99 at AutoZone. They even have the procedure on their site http://www.autozone.com/shoppi...9781c

Just picked up a belt at AutoZone, plus a 6-sided 19mm socket (pretty sure all I have at home is 12-'sided')Noticed that the tensioner is only $49.99 http://www.autozone.com/R,APP7...l.htm I had this replaced at the dealer about 6 months after we bought it (used, but under extended warranty). The bill was close to $300. (our warranty has a $50 deductible)

I would say change it. I change mine at 40,000 cause my pulley was making noise.

Well, that was easy. Only one problem, my breaker bar wasn't long enough. Oh well, for $21.99, I'm not going to complain. Not sure why they recommend taking the wheelwell splash guard off and putting the front of the car up in the air (jack stands). I was able to replace the belt from above with no problems.
