P0012 & diagnostic help needed!

Took my Vibe in for some warranty work (a CEL that's been ringing in for almost a year), long story which I may go into detail about later. Down to the nitty gritty:I'm getting a P0012 (camshaft over-retarded or something of the sort). Could this at all be related to putting on a CAI? If so, I'm out of pocket for the expenses, as warranty won't cover it. I'm also getting a P0441 (evap purge solenoid), which I'm assuming is connected to the CAI. I've told the $tealership to ignore that one.My appointment is tomorrow night, so quick help is appreciated greatly!

The camshaft issue has nothing to do with the CAI. PO441 is a common emission system code which should not be related to the CAI unless you hooked something up wrong. Did they show up immediately after the CAI installation?

Nope. The CAI was installed last year, and that particular code jsut started. Judging by what Kevera has posted in the other thread, I don't have the intake hooked up correctly. As long as the camshaft issue isn't related it should be covered under warranty then. Hopefully. That doesn't sound like a cheap fix...

I don't see how the camshaft could be affected by the CAI.

The only way I could figure that they'd even be related is that both the MAF (and the MAF would be affected by an intake) and the camshaft position (among other variables) are what dictate the timing of the engine, if I'm reading the vvt-i diagram correctly. However, even if they are both inputs for another controller, it would seem that the camshaft position and the MAF should read independently, therefore not affect each other.

the book says a P0012 can be caused by - Valve timing- Oil control valve- Camshaft timing gear assy- ECMI think the code is that the engine is trying to set a particular timing, and can't. Please let me know if I'm wrong, but I think the MAF can affect what timing the computer is trying to set, but a P0012 means that whatever the timing it wants to set, it can't get what it wants. I don't see how the CAI could cause a P0012 either. The P0012 sounds like it could be a costly repair. I'd ask them to get your approval before they do any expensive repairs they won't cover under warranty. If they say it will be an expensive fix and they won't warranty it because of the CAI, make them prove that the failure was actually caused by the CAI. The CAI might cause the evap purge CEL though, but so could a loose gas cap. If the P0441 was caused by the CAI, then check to make sure you didn't leave something disconnected to be a vaccum leak.

Thanks for the help. Always helps to go in with a bit of knowledge to back a guy up.Got the car back today, and the problem was the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. They replaced it and both codes cleared. Managed to get a free oil change out of the deal, as they charged me for the first round of diagnostics.At least it's fixed and warrantied. I saw images of massive $$$ leaving my hands...

Bah. This problem has crept up again. Took it to a different dealership this time. They took out the sensor, and reconnected the wiring harness (they said it was loose, and that was the problem). CEL was cleared until I got it home. It seems to be ringing in and out every 200kms or so. Won't stay on solid.
