Yesterday morning I took my dog to the vet. She had not been feeling well for a day or so. They did a test which came back positive for the parvovirus. She is staying at the hospital with an i.v. in isolation.

Oh man, that's not good to say the least...is the prognosis any better for adult dogs than it is with puppies?

Not really. If your dog is up to date on their shots, they will be ok.

so sorry to hear that... was your dog vac. for the parvo? what about lepto/lime?I know some say that they don't think they should do it but I tell you the first time you pull a tick out of your dog you will never think twice about getting the lepto and lime vacination.

I just had her in on Wednesday to get her second set, Thursday she started having symptoms. She should be ok. ah... didn't know your dog's age. it's sad because now your dog will be very likely, to aquire the parvo virus again for the rest of their life and depending on how quickly you got your dog to the vet after the first signs of the virus the dog has a 50%chance the first three days are key to the dogs survival.did you get a contract from who you possibly bought the dog from? What i am getting at is, did you sign a contract stating that your dog would be free from infection?

So sorry to read the news. I hope that your pup is okay. The parvo virus is in the environment. She could have picked it up while walking in the park, pet store, or even at her last vet visit.

We went to visit her yesterday and she is doing very well. She is looking better and was very excited to see us. She might be coming home today!

I'm glad she's doing better. She must be so confused right now, not feeling well and stuck in a strange place is no fun. I I hope she gets to come home soon.

Wow, sorry to hear about the pup. I see things are turning around though.... Lots of fluids is what i've read.... Lots of fluids... A friend of ours has had 2 dogs die now of this both pups... We won't take our dogs over there anymore... She now has a 3rd dog that was past the puppy stage that seems to be doing just fine though... It was really hard on her with the first 2 though... Good luck to you and the pup...

I lost a Shepard pup to parvo in 1996. If I remember correctly, parvo is transmitted via feces and it lives for 6-12 months in your yard (or where ever your dog went poo). The only chemical safe enough to use that will kill it is bleach mixed with water sprayed over you entire yard (which will probably kill the grass).When my dog got it, the vet said it would be $1,200 to treat and he would not guarantee the dog would survive nor would he guarantee it would not end up with life long complications. Rather than put the dog through that, I had to put her down.Glad your dog recovered.

We took our carpet cleaner, mixed a little bleach in with the other chemicals, cleaned the mattresses, couch, carpets and chairs. Sprayed all the concrete around the house with bleach, sprayed all the walls & doors. Pretty much we bleached the entire house. I didn't bleach my lawn, since it is transmitted through the feces and the virus can live in the soil for 10 months or so, we just have to keep her away from other dogs for 6 weeks or so. After that, the virus should have left her and will be safe. There isn't anything we can do about the lawn though. We are doing everything possible to prevent this from spreading to other dogs. The vet we took her to told us they have seen about 5 times as many dogs with parvo so far this year than what they will normally treat in a 12 month period. It must be some sort of outbreak here.

It must be some sort of outbreak here.I've read it can stay active on DRY concrete throught the WINTER for a year... wow .. It's not just there either, they have had to stop the local "doggy swap meet" every week here because of it... I have a feeling it's going to get worse before it gets better, for some reason... Your yard could be the biggest problem though, if you think about it. That's usually where "business" is taken care of..
