Got a spare key?

Here's a cautionary tale for those who bought a pre-owned Vibe.During the heavy rain we had here in the northeast earlier in the week, I parked my Vibe in the company lot and ran the 50 yards to the door.At quitting time, I went through my coat for my keys, but the pockets were empty. Guess the keys fell out during my run to the door in the A.M.The used Vibe only came with 1 key and remote. I had purchased a keyless remote off of ebay and figured I could call the wife and ask her to bring it. Then I realized that the other remote had no key. I never got around to getting another key cut. I hoped that maybe the keys were still where they fell, so I re-traced my steps back to the car. The keys have a AAA tag on them with "postage guaranteed" if found. Visions of my car sitting for a week while the postal service and AAA tried to track me down went through my head.As I got closer to the car, I saw a wet note taped to the windshield that told me to go to another company's security desk to retrieve my keys.I am lucky that there are good people in the world still. The moral of the story is: get a spare key if you don't already have one. They cost less than $3 at your local hardware store."The more you know..."

I keep a spare key in my wallet. Saved me on several occasions. Of course I learned this lesson after paying someone to open my car 3 times at $80 a pop!

I keep the spare at home, so either my parents or somebody else can retrieve it for me. I also have never locked a set in a car, ever. The keys have chips in them so I am not so sure you can just get another one made without going to the dealer and paying for it first.I also don't carry a wallet, I don't like that worn look on the back of the jeans, or the potential back issues down the road.

For my 2005 AWD, the key doesn't have a chip. The guy at the hardware store actually used a heldheld tester to confirm before he cut the key.Can anyone confirm what years may have a chipped key?

That's awesome that there are still good people in the world. I have only locked my keys in one of my cars once. The car was still running too.

I made a few sets of spares. One of which i keep on me the other at home. the cost a couple of bucks at walmart.and lockout service where they have to create a new key from a non-exsistant key can be really pricy! I have not had to do this personally but rental companies tend to have this happen occasionaly.

funny story bot my first car. pontiac sunbird. not sunfire..... sunBIRD. lol doors automatically locked when put in gear. 2 winters in a row both during the first substantial snowfall, i locked myself out of my car. keys in the ignition, and transmission in DRIVE! lol. first time i used bout a half a tank of gas waiting to have a key cut at pontiac. second time was a bit scarier as my car was driving through a snow covered field toward a creek while i fished the spare out of my wallet. not a good time. lol

one does have to wonder why you would get out of a car with it in gear... I did it once at work but tankfully I set the parking break... I can be in a bit of a hurry sometimes when I am at work

I've never locked myself out of my car before, but I'm plenty dumb enough to.... for that reason, I have one hidden on the outside of the vehicle.

lol i lost control and spun out off the road with my nose pointing in the correct direction for the correct lane. so i left it in gear and got out and pushed, thinking i could just jump back in and go..... but the door shut by mistake and hence..... locked out. then the ca drifted back off the road into a field. thebest part is... TOWARD a CREEK. lol id have ad fun explainig that to the insurance company
