Storms tear through Virginia; tornado watches in effect 07:00 PM EDT on Monday, April 28, 2008Associated Press & 13News SUFFOLK, VA. -- Severe storms have swept through parts of central and Southside Virginia, causing some property damage and flash flooding. Associated Press reports authorities say one person died and at least 200 suffered injuries throughout the Commonwealth. In Hampton Roads; Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk were under tornado warnings Monday evening. Suffolk city spokeswoman Dana Woodson said one person died when two tornadoes passed through the city Monday afternoon. Bob Spieldenner from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management said at least 200 others were injured in Suffolk. According to Dale Gauding, spokesman for Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, the storm caused damage to the hospital. A few patients had to be relocated, but Gauding says there are no reports of injuries to anyone inside the hospital as a result of the storm. He adds the storm caused car window damage to vehicle parked outside the hospital. Chesapeake Fire Chief Dan Fermil says five engine companies, a ladder company, three medic companies, an EMS supervisor, a Battalion Chief and one heavy squad are all on the scnee in Suffolk to assist with care and rescue. According to Lt. Debbie George of the Suffolk Police Department, police went to the scene of at least one tornado touchdown in the Route 58 corridor near Route 10. She asks that parents of children at Liberty Baptist Pre-School go to the Farm Fresh parking lot on North Main Street to pick up their children. George adds that homes and vehicles in the Hillpoint Farms and Burnett Mills neighborhoods suffered damage. A tornado came ashore on Pier 2 at Naval Station Norfolk, according to spokesperson Terry Davis. She adds that the damage is "superficial," limited to a door, a copule of windows, a section of siding and a few fallen trees. Davis adds no ships suffered damage. Billie Jean Elmer, spokeswoman for Surry County, says that only one double-wide tailer in Beaver Dam Road, in the Clairemont section, suffered damage. Elmer says there were no injuries reported. Witnesses tell Richmond television station WWBT that cars were overturned in the Southpark Mall area of Colonial Heights. A police dispatcher there hung up the phone Monday afternoon, saying authorities were too busy to talk. Property damage also was reported in Brunswick County, one of several localities where the National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning. Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police said a twister destroyed two homes. Trees and power lines were down, and some flooding was reported. According to Chuck Penn with Dominion Power, about 2,500 people are without power in the Suffolk/Driver area. Gloucester has around 16,000 without power. Authorities said callers later reported seeing a funnel cloud near Portsmouth. The Associated Press contributed to this report

man i hate tornadoes. they look cook in videos, but i'd never want to be anywhere near one. a funnel cloud passed right over my house in indiana when i was younger, and that's as close as i want to get. the wind split a tree next to my house that blocked the street for hours. after seeing that, i realized that mother nature is greatly underestimated my the general publici noticed that k nine hasn't posted here since the 24th, maybe he's just busy with other things. my thoughts are with him though. hope you're doing ok, k-nine!!!

Thanks for the concern and the emails. Everything is fine at home. The ironic thing is that I left work early yesterday to drop the Vibe off at the bodyshop. I had some highway debree damage my hood a few days ago. If I had left work on time, I would have been in that area at the exact time it hit. I could see some of the damage from the highway this morning. I can't believe the size of the trees that were snapped off like twigs.
