I lost my best friend on Friday

Friday was a bad day. I had to put Simba, my 9yr old Rottweiler mix to sleep. About a month ago she started limping. She was examined by the vet and diagnosed with arthritis. We started treating her with Deramaxx and Tramadol. Overall, she improved but the limp in her right front leg would not get better. I took her to vet on Thursday for x-rays of her shoulder and a large bone tumor was found on her shoulder and spotting on her lung. She couldn't stand anymore without wimpering and I couldn't bear to see her suffer. She went to sleep Friday morning. I raised her from a 6 week old puppy and I feel so lost without her. She really was my best friend and the first living being to teach me what unconditional love really is. She had a wonderful life, I just wish it could have lasted a little longer.

My condolences man.... I keep looking at my buddy Ruzz-T wondering when it's going to be time for him... The vet said he's got a heart murmor that's just going to get worse and estimated 2yrs, about a year ago now.. Like Kami said though, they couldn't have been a better 9yrs, right... You're in my thoughts...

Sorry to hear that. My dogs are a bit older and one of them is full of tumors (one the size of a baseball). The vet said they are benign and as long as the dog doesn't appear to be in pain, he is not overly concerned. My other dog has suffered from arthritis for years. When it acts up, I give her 500mg of Ester C (regular C is too acidic for dogs) and she is better within 3 days.I dread the day I have to go through what you are going through...I truly sympathize with what you are experiencing.

I'm very sorry to hear it. My old dog (parent's now) did the same thing. Started limping in January. they treated her and thought it was ok, but then she started not eating or drinking. after a month of force feeding her, they had to put her down last month. she was 9 yr old as well, pretty young for a toy poodle. That's why it concerns me that one of my poodles has been limping since Nov or so. I've taken her in to the vet a few times and they say it's arthritis, did xrays, etc. the vet said they found something kinda strange, but didn't look like it was a big deal, something with the bone density... but that could be due to her not walking on the leg much all winter. I'm keeping an eye on her, she's still eating and drinking food, so that's a good sign. So, again, my condolences to you. My dogs are my kids so I know I'd be devastated.

So sorry for your loss. I will be heartbroken when (if) I have to make that decision for my cats. I like them better than people.

I appreciate everyones kind words, it helps. I know there are several animal lovers on GenVibe. Some people may not understand this but losing Simba hit me harder than losing my Dad. I knew for months he was terminal (lung cancer) and it gave me a chance to spend time with him and say goodbye. I had less than 24hrs to process the news and put Simba to sleep. life works in strange ways. I'm just thankful for my other dogs. If I had to go home to an empty house, I think I'd lose my mind. Again, thanks for your support.

Again, thanks for your support.I completely understand. I had to fly down for a week to help my mom because her and my dad were a wreck! Granted, I also needed to do some work down there too, so that was my excuse but really, they were taking it so hard. It was only a week after she was put down and we (my brother and I) decided they needed a new dog, my mom was so lonely and my dad was just so sad. So we got them a new puppy, did some research on "designer" dogs and got them a cute little bischon frise/coton mix pure white (old dog was chocolate poodle) so she wouldn't remind my mom of her. They weren't sure if it was too soon, but they really needed another little dog to love. So far, it's going well and both of them are pretty attached to the new puppy. So yes, it's good you have other dogs or it'd probably be really tough.

Hope, I will include your poodle in my prayers. I hope its just arthritis and nothing else develops. I give my dogs Glucosamine to help fight off arthritis. It helped Simba for a long time and is still helping Lucky run like a puppy. Ask your Vet about it. It's a dietary supplement in liquid form. I'm sorry to hear about your parents dog. They are just like kids and you feel hopelessly lost when they're gone.

I really feel for you man .. it takes a pet owner to understand what you are feeling and going through.my cat Prissy is 15 and is in good health but I'll know it will kill me when that time comes.

Ya, we try and give them both a little treat thing with Glucosamine in it, but my mom told me to go buy it from Costco, it's big and the dogs seem to like the taste or something. I need to go to Costco anyways.... But seeing what happened to your dog now, and very similar to what happened to them (and it being so sudden which is why it was so difficult for them to come to terms) just makes me concerned. I've taken her in twice now for this, same thing: arthritis. I'll keep watching her, they put her on some pain meds Rimadyl for a 2 weeks.

I understand your concerns, I'm nervous about Lucky now. She's 8yrs old. Try a better type of glucosamine and see if the limp improves. It should take 2-4 weeks to see a difference with a good quality supplement. Don't bother with Costco or any local stores. This is what I give my dogs:
http://www.synflexamerica.com I did my homework a couple years ago and have been buying it ever since. I really hope your dog gets better.

Thanks for the link! I think I'll order some and put both of them on it. I don't think it'll hurt.
