That's right, record gas prices, Pontiac thinks we want a sport truck, built on a G8 chassis,They are having a contest to come up with a name for the new model. I don't remember if they also had a contest to come up with the name for the Vibe, but I do know they had one to come up with paint color names. So to enter your sport truck name suggestion, go to http://www.pontiac.com/namethiscarI submitted the name ghost, since H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, g8=gh, then the st at the end for sport truck, a vowel in the middle to make it a word. Fits, but likely a non-marketable car name

Innnnnnnnnteresting... The winner of the vehicle will be selected by random drawing, regardless of what name they submit.Quote »WINNER SELECTION AND VERIFICATION: The potential winner will be selected in a random drawing conducted on or about 4/30/08 from among all eligible entries received. BUT...ALL NAMES submitted become the property of GM, and you're not entitled to compensation, even if they use your suggestion, now or twenty years from now...Quote »(b) agree that any Vehicle Name submitted shall be deemed a "work made for hire" under U.S. copyright law with the Entry being specially prepared by Entrant for Sponsor, with all rights therein, including, without limitation, the exclusive copyright, being the exclusive property of Sponsor; (c) irrevocably assigns to Sponsor all right, title, and interest in Vehicle Name (including, without limitation, the copyright or any goodwill connection with the Vehicle Name) in any and all media whether now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, anywhere in the world, with the right to make any and all uses thereof without compensation to Entrants, including, without limitation, for purposes of advertising or trade (and, upon Sponsor's request, entrant further agrees to sign any additional documentation so as to record, perfect or effect such assignment);Link to full game rules and conditions --> http://pontiac.emipowered.net/....htmlEDIT: I also noticed that no NUMBERS are allowed, only uppercase letters, so apparently Pontiac doesn't want a TAILG8 (my first idea), G8TR, GR8TRK or anything of the sort.

This looks just like the Australian Holden Ute SS, Australia's version of the Chevy El Camino.

As it carries on in the tradition of the El Camino of old, I shall name this... El GasSucko! Think they'd take that name? I likey the Holden Ute quite a little bit and have wanted to see them bring it over for a long time... would rather have that than any ol' pickem'up truck. BUT... my main concern is the fuel economy... These Holdens from down under are crap in that department. Maybe we'll get lucky and the gas guzzler tax will be slapped on this one just like the GTO. In these days of $3.50/gallon, I'd rather have a significantly smaller and lighter 4-banger version. I'm not going to haul much anyway. It would be like a current day Dodge Rampage! (removed)!

If they don't sell it as a Chevy El Camino, they are doomed to fail - imho.

I believe Bob Lutz said they wouldn't do an El Camino because Chevy's portfolio is large enough as it is.But I do agree with you, I think it would do better as the El Camino.

The Subaru Baja? Yeah, they canceled that because of, you guessed it, poor sales.

Why would you call something El Camino when it's not a Chevy???I know it's still in the GM stable, but that's like naming a car the Saturn Trailblazer or Chevy Vibe. Just doesn't work. Heck why not make the new Monte Carlo and call it the GTO?!?!I think it could do well. It does very well in Australia in competition with the Ford Falcon ute. I do see potential. The Baja was a joke, it had no storage in the back. Based on these photos this will at least have some decent cargo space available to use, unlike the Baja. Just call it the Pontiac G8 S/T (sport truck)

I think the people saying it should be called the El Camino were thinking it would be redesigned to be a Chevy.

Well Seeing how gm owns Holden and that the g8 is just a North American version of their Maurader I believe, that is why is looks like thier Ute. i think it is cool.. but wouldn't want to pay for the gas.

AHAHHHHH!!! I don't think I can go a 15 minute span in my life without hearing someone talk about how expensive gas is. It may be expensive but I love driving and I will pay no matter how much it is per gallon. Think about this too: do you REALLY want to only see tiny pathetic little fuel efficient cars with barely enough power to carry four passengers up a slightly inclined hill cruising around in the future? Yeah they could make powerful alternative fuel cars but that is sooo far off. TThink about it...you're standing in a parking lot somewhere and you hear this engine start up and seem to tear a hole in time itself from the massive power and strength. You can smell the 93 or higher octane just pouring out of the exhaust like a fire hydrant. Feel the engine in your BONES as it idles past. Stops at the light and you can hear the pounding of the cylinders echoing off EVERYTHING around you, buildings, cars, street signs. See the windows of the shop vibrating. It takes off at the light ever so smoothly but is so loud and powerful you can hear it and feel it miles away. You wont ever get that again at the rate things are going now...why would you want that to go away? You won't get that kind of a feeling from a Ferrari either, not even a Veyron. Only American muscle.I agree with Damron: "FINALLY". That truck would be an excellent idea in my opinion, even if I can never afford one or pay for the gas, just to see them driving around would be good enough for me. It's a good kick off for a new generation of muscle cars including the Camaro and Challenger. We are being laughed at because we do not have that power we once had

I was just saying I couldn't afford the gas for it here.. I wouldn't mind owning one though.. But then again you look at what you pay a gallon is still less than what we are paying here in Canada.. We are now paying $1.10+/L

a follow up, http://media.gm.com/servlet/Ga...47838Quote »FOR RELEASE: 2008-08-14Pontiac Names All New Sport Truck The "G8 ST"Segment-Defining Vehicle on Target for Late 2009 LaunchPontiac G8 ST at a Glance Sports car with truck-like cargo and towing capabilities V8 engine with Active Fuel Management linked to six-speed automatic 74-inch cargo bed and 3,500 lb towing capacity Estimated fuel economy near top of vehicles with comparable cargo/towing capacity Available in late 2009 as a 2010 modelDetroit - After sifting through more than 18,000 possibilities, Pontiac has chosen to keep it simple, naming the recently revealed G8 sport truck the "G8 ST"Thousands of fans submitted suggestions during a "Tame the Name" promotion, which delayed a final announcement until each possibility was considered and cleared for possible trademark use."Frankly, we were blown away by both the volume and quality of the names that were submitted," said Craig Bierley, BPG product marketing director for cars and crossovers. 'G8 ST' was one of the most popular suggestions, plus we noticed a far broader trend toward simple, easy-to-remember names""El Camino" was also a sentimental favorite, given the G8 ST's resemblance to the classic Chevy."We actually thought very long about El Camino," said Bierley. "In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honor the El Camino's unique place as part of Chevy's heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac."Perhaps the ultimate reflection of the blurring line between cars and trucks, the G8 ST will create a unique niche segment in the marketplace: a sports car with truck-like cargo and towing capabilities. Sharing the basic architecture and 361 hp V8 engine as the G8 GT performance sedan, it will offer a 73.9-inch cargo bed that has 42.7 cubic feet of cargo space and can carry a payload of 1,000 pounds (453 kg) or tow a 3,500-pound (1,587 kg) trailer. Thanks to its six-speed automatic transmission and Active Fuel Management system, the G8 ST should offer some of the best fuel economy numbers for V8-powered vehicles with similar cargo/towing ratings while still turning in zero-to-60 times of 5.4 seconds. The G8 ST will be available in late 2009 as a 2010 model and will be backed by GM's industry best 100,000 mile, 5-year powertrain warranty. Pricing will be announced closer to availability.

So they ended up with a number even though they said no numbers....heh.(And as a side note, if a car has gas coming out of the exhaust pipe it probably has a problem. )

Why doesn't GM just delete Pontiac all together and just import all of the holdens? Quality with real american V8s cant beat that. Additionally just another GM gripe. The Astra, I've loved that car since the first time I saw one in Scotland back in '06. What does GM go and do? Bring the standard low-end model and try to market it as a sport compact?

Not sure they picked the right name. I would have went the with the "G8 (removed)" (just my opinion though).Looks like Whelan named it correctly back in March!
