I know someone who is selling an '02 Protege LX AT with 40k on the odometer. The car is in great shape and the seller is asking $6800. Anybody have experience with this vehicle? I have driven the car and was quite impressed.

I have a TON of mazda experience. My wife and I own 3; 02 protege 5, 98 protege ES and my 95 Miata. My mother-in-law also has an 02 ES. The LX will treat you right if you treat it right. only problems I've had is the auto tranny needs to be taken car of. the 98 went at about 100k. the p5 is still going strong at 110k. Also, if it has the 2.0 FSDE engine, it might sound like it has a "tick" but in most cases it's the noisy hydrolic lifters. for more info, check out mazdas247.com

I liked the Protege 5's but two things bothered me about them. No longer made em, and no AWD option. Almost got the 3 instead also but again, no AWD.

Yeah, as will all cool JDM vehicles, we got screwed. the JDM version has awd. but at it's core, it's an enconomy car, so it won't have break neck speeds, but I'll tell you what, NOBODY catches me in the corners. I wring my wagon out on the regular. I love taking exit ramps at high velocity. it got even better when I lowered it. I hang out with guys who have really juiced up their wagons, turbo kits and everything. it does wonders for the car, really wakes it up, but there's so much that goes into boosting that I shy away from it. We call it the "Zoom-Zoom-Boom" club.
