So, MSN Auto describes the Vibe as "Pontiac's Sport Wagon",http://autos.msn.com/research/...=Vibeand the Matrix as "a compact crossover vehicle",http://autos.msn.com/research/...atrixummm, aren't they in exactly the same category?

Hence it is MSN Auto and not MT, C&D, etc.

esssentially they either could be put into either catagory... it just depends on what demographic you're going for at the time

Well I think Pontiac itself describes the Vibe on their website as a "Sport Wagon". I don't know what Toyota says the Matrix is. I've also heard the Vibe called a crossover, or a quasi-suv. I personally go with Sport Wagon because that is what Pontiac calls it.
