My bad, I didn't know that the fires were in San Diego. Hopefully everyone will be ok, material possessions can be replaced, but a life cannot.

So far over 250,000 people have been evacuated, people are staying in the Chargers Qualcomm stadium and the Chargers are using Arizona to practice. Due to a big wet season there last year the vegetation was able to grow abnormally high, and with this year being so dry, and the winds reaching 30-60+mph, it created these massive fires. President and governor declared states of emergency currently 1300 NG troops inbound. And according to Yahoo, the fire is approaching the Magic Kingdom.More photos available at yahoo.com set to the story of the magic kingdom and click on photos.http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,303881,00.html

Fox News just stated now that 1,000,000 people have been displaced so far. It is forecast that today will be hotter than yesterday and wind gusts will be up to 70-80mph. They also said that there is ZERO % containment. That means there will be a lot more damage to come. My prayers go out to those in the fire's paths.

I was in SD this weekend and driving out on the 8 through the Santa Ana's, the wind was absolutely horrible! I was fighting harder than ever before just to keep the car on the road, let alone in one lane. Had to pull over rather than risk it. Could see the fires coming on Sunday and Monday morning we knew we were lucky to only take 11 hrs getting from SD to Phx.

I'm here not getting burnt up yet as I live and work so close to the ocean. It is pretty much surrounding me, but as of right now I am still here in no pending danger and still required to be at work at the shipyard!

Glad to hear you are ok out there Jason. By the way, I would've contacted you to see about meeting up had my schedule not been so tight. With the Fiancee, the trip was all about the Zoo and Sea World, so there wasn't an ounce of time to do a mini-meet. Although, I did take the Vibe...

My Vibe's in the shop right now. Zoo is horrible to me, Sea World is cool, but I've been to both so many times it's ridiculous.

Actually, from what I was hearing, the ARB came out, took some readings, and said get these people out of here now! lol At 8:40 this morning one of the foremen came through and said "pack up your ****, everyone has to be out of here by 9!" There goes 4.5 of my 7hrs of vacation time I had on the books, and if we don't work tomorrow or Friday, not sure how the rents gonna get paid, b/c NASSCO won't give us **** if we don't work!

Got evacuated on Mon afternoon but was allowed back home late yesterday. Most of the damage is about 1-2 miles north of me. One person I used to work with has had his house burnt. Most people I know live in North county so we got bounced from place to place as they also got evaucated. I had my camera on me but was too tired to take pics.In 2003 during the Cedar fire my neighbourhood suffered the worst damage with about 300 homes burnt about 2 miles east of me. This time we seem to have survived. My nighbour had a buring ember fall in his backyard in 03 but he quickly put it out before it started something.I'm sure this will happen again in a few years once the brush is dry enough and the conditions are correct. As for the Vibe - I think a new air filter might be in order given the quality of the air - all the dust and ash.

And as for the filter, probably would be a good idea for everybody to get a new one after this is all said and done!

Doesn't this happen like every year? I know this is the worst it's been, so far. You'd think that instead of evacuating everyone, they'd give some of the residents a little training and a couple rolls of fire hose and put them to work protecting there neighborhoods. You know that there's never enough firefighters for even the smaller fires.Damrinjr, you might be eligable for some gov. funding if your finacially affected by this fire. Check it out.

You know that there's never enough firefighters for even the smaller fires. Yes, Santa Ana winds blow in SoCal every fall. And everyone knew it would be a bad fire season due to the incredibly dry winter we had. Unfortunately it seems arsonists-in-waiting knew it as well, and took advantage of the first real Santa Anas this year to do their thing. The arson-caused Santiago fire came within 1500 feet of my home in OC on Monday - and I was in Washington DC at the time! My wife had some of the essential stuff ready to go, but we were not evacuated. The fire is off to the east now burning through the Cleveland National Forest, no homes are currently threatened. Firefighters prepare for these events and go on alert when the Santa Anas blow. I doubt it is feasible for residents to stay behind and protect their neighborhoods - with wind gusts up to 100mph at times, there is only so much that can be done, and there is only so much water available. The media are comparing the govt response to Katrina, but as bad as it is, this does not compare to Katrina. Virtually all SoCal infrastructure is up and running, businesses are running, most people are in their homes and life goes on. If evacuees need something, it can be obtained quickly. My only issue with response is the lack of heavy air support, especially on the Santiago fire the first few days. Our state officials always drag their feet leasing the Canadian super-scooper planes and National Guard plans were not on scene until Tuesday (apparently not requested right away). Given the drought, and the advance forecasted winds, those assets should have been here before the wind started blowing.

I agree with ya that they shouldn't compare the CA fires with Katrina. Two totally different kinds of disasters. And, I would think CA is much better prepaired for disasters then LA. Unfortunatly you guys in CA have a lot more events and experiance with earthquakes, fires, riots.Oh, I didn't mean that every resisdent should stay and fight. But I'm sure there would be enough volunteers to help fill in the gaps. You do have a point though that these types of fires are hard and unpredictable to fight. 100mph gust's! WOW! I can't even imagin that here in WI. Anything over 65mph is considered a tornado or 'micro burst'.Any way, stay safe and good luck!

Yeah, people who move here from other parts of the country sometimes say they miss the 4 seasons of winter. But we have 4 seasons here:Fire, Mudslides, Earthquakes, Riots!
