Why is Matrix cheaper?

I priced identical Matrix and Vibe and even with new $500 Pontiac rebate, the Matrix is ~$900 cheaper. Why is this?

In Canada the Matrix looks cheaper but even before rebate my Vibe was $100 cheaper. My base Vibe with power package & alloys was $21,900 with freight. With these options it is basically the same as a Matrix XR. A Matrix XR is $22,000 with freight. I got fog lights & a roof rack which the Matrix does not have. Every other option is identical.

Priced identical models through few internet services so I could compare lis prices (U.S.). Chose Base Vibe with 5-speed, monotone paint, and power accessory group.

Don't forget the 120 volt plug and the block heater. Little things add up...

http://www.edumunds.com has pricing as this:2003 Vibe w/Power package $17,500 ($18,000 with Monotone Appearence Package-no silmular Matrix option)2003 Matrix XR w/Cruise, All Weather, Sport Plus Package $17,270(All US Prices)The other way of looking at it might be: How can simular cars built BY Toyota and FOR Pontiac in differnt countries and different plants (Nummi required $200 plus million upgrade
http://www.nummi.com/doc_start_production.html ) and in different volumes (Corolla/Voltz/Matrix probable 6x Vibe production) be so close in price?

I know there is a thread similar to this one from a few months back. I have done a search for it but so far no luck. It includes a response from GM. I will post the link if I can find it.- Mike

Thanks for looking, I'll be curious on reply since I don't think such items as a roof rack and other small add ons justify price difference quote I received (at least to me they don't). Someone mentioned the Matrix doesn't have the montone paint option but that is because it is already in monotone from the start. The webistes and AAA quote similar invoice numbers and add anywhere from $200-$400 on top so easy to compare and wonder why Pontiac feels they can charge more. I know that GM typically prices high and then tacks on healthy rebate so you feel like you're getting a deal. Buthen it seems $500 cash back would need to grow to $1500 cash back. Thanks for input guys...
