I was on my home from picking up my son at the in-laws and I was following a Jeep and the next thing you know, a stone slams my windshield leaving a big chip DAMMIT Boy, does that (removed) me off!!I can imagine a big crack that'll be there in the next couple weeks.

Sorry to hear that! That is one thing that you can't look around because it's in front of you all the time.Hope you have good coverage on your insurance! I would get the windshield replaced if at all possible before you get a crack starting. Make sure you ask around and do your research for a good shop.

I had a stone chip on my 4Runner for over 3 years and it still never led to a crack when I traded it for my Vibe.I just wander if I'll have that same luck with my Vibe.

Silver's suggestions are interesting. Also you may want to consider purchasing a windshield repair kit (at an auto parts store) that will prevent any further deterioration of the chipped area.

quote:I know this may sound funny, you are married or have a girlfriend handy?Get some of their clear nail polish and put some on there right now, but clean the area with alcohol/cotton ball good before you do this. Dap a little on, not too much and should prevent it from cracking more. You can do this with super glue too, but make sure it is flush so it does not effect the wiper blades. Just don't use bright red nail polish. Might be a distraction. Women do this all the time when they get a run in their panty hose!

Thanks, It's supposed to warm up this weekend, I'll have to try that.

Instead of buying a windshield repair kit, have a professional do it. Just find one in the yellow pages. You have to do it soon to avoid it turning into a crack and also collecting contaminants. I've had it done twice for about $50 with good results. Once you couldn't tell at all. The other I waited while and you could tell there was something there, but only if you looked hard.

quote:Good idea there Try a Toyota dealer and see if they had to replace one yet on a Matrix. Then you would know where to go. I believe most or all dealers send the car out to have a windshield replaced.

I had the same thing happen to me. Try to cover the chip with Scotch tape right away. My insurance totally covered my repair cost's and was easy to do. I just called my insurance guy, he gave me the number for "The guy's in the little red truck". They, then took care of calling my insurance guy back to get my info and they showed up at my house the next day to fix it. I was sorta hoping the windshield would break while the guy was fixing it so I could get a new one. The chip was the size of a nickel, now it just looks like a speck of dirt if you look real hard.

It's probably already too late but here in Canada you can get a small chip "injected" and it doesn't affect your insurance rate. Beware of too many claims though as many insurance companies will give you the good-bye kiss or raise your rates excessively. They specialize in collecting premiums, not paying out!

I have had the same luck in the past with the "rock nick" as well.. My insurence co. did a great job in referring a local repair co. to do the work. Also I had a bonus.. My original glass was a regular non-tinted type, now my newer has a blue tint on the upper 1/8th portion on the windshield. Also, after the repair, I inquried to my insurance agent to how much the windshield would normally cost if I had to pay for it... she said $825!! Whew.. that's some expensive glass.... although it does have the integrated Nav system stuff on it as well..

I got my first stone chip a few weeks back. With the way my auto insurance works, I get all stone chips for free, so I'll be taking mine in shortly. It doesn't look like it has the inclination to spread, so that's good. The chip is almost hidden from the interior because it's located within the "black dots."
