the factory oil filter is a Toyota part. I don't know the toyota part number. If you want, you could get the filter for a Matrix XRS or Vibe GT. They will fit the base engine but are a little bit bigger, which means it will take more oil to fill up but you'll have more oil and more filter element. I have a base and don't bother with the GT filter. I don't bother with synthetic oil, and since I don't know who makes the filters for Toyota, I use a Purolator filter. If you do find an online vendor that gives a good price and low shipping, then post up the link.

I switched to AC/Delco filters with my Vibe because, as joatmon said, we don't know who manufactured the toyo filters. you can get them at pep boys.

Yes you can use syn oil with stock filter. The stock filter is a toyota part and is made by Toyota. This info comes from a Toyota main rep and from several mechanics that work for Toyota. They are a better filter than aftermarket and ac delco since Toyota uses higher tollerances for the check valves inside the filter. Also just a note from a Vibe and a Toyota owner, Toyota informed me when I bought my truck of this filter and if my engine was to seize or have major problems they could trace back to a oil prob they would void the warranty if they found a aftermarket filter on the car. I always use Toyota parts for both our Vibe and my truck since both engines are made by Toyota.

Whelan: What advantage would that be other than bigger filter and more oil. That' all it does. I use the GT filter on my base for the extra filter area. The little extra oil takes me to an even 4 qts instead of slightly less, so it works out fine. Cost is the same I think. Purolator PureOne #PL14477, $5.88 at Advance Auto Parts.

to slightly change the topic I have a question...which filter is a better filter; the PURE 1 by Puralator or Mobile 1 Filter.

I believe there is an entire thread devoted to the best oil filter, or the relative characteristics of different brands. Someone may post the correct link to it. I chose the PureOne because it was highly rated, easily found, and slightly less expensive than the Mobil-1.

I figure, why not? And Pennzoil synthetic.
