Bad day at the office!

Well it finally hit! 16 people got laid off today at my office! Most good sales friends of mine, been with the company many years too. One 1.5 years from retirement! I am one of the lucky ones! We were told in a 9:00 meeting, people would be let go before 12:00! We were all sick to our stomachs as people were told and boxes were brought to their cubes. One was one of my two bosses! This is just really sad, Mich is in a single state recession and now more are affected by it!

Wow!Well I'm definitely glad you were one of the lucky ones. Still, my heart goes out to those who were not so fortunate. That's a really sad event.

Oh Todd that sucks! Glad it wasn't you, but still--it's very hard to see your friends and co-workers go through that. I hope that is the last of the cuts for a while though.

That's crazy man.... glad you made it through... Back when i got layed-off from IBM i was one of 500..!!!!! over that dumped 1500!!! that was a few years ago though... It's a wonder if everyone doesn't move out of Mi.... I know how bad the state of things are... I feel VERY lucky that i now work for one of the largest reaserch/chemical companies in the world, based in Midland... Times are getting harder and harder for the "Big 3" and it's KILLing Mi economy... I hope things continue to be good for you, let's all hope that you at least get 1.5 more years... !!

wow! the guy was only 1.5 yrs from retirement?? that's pretty crummy! i gotta say, though it sucks at times being out on my own working for myself, it's nice to not answer to any corp exec about why my numbers are this or that. i don't have to defend myself to anyone but myself or to Mav. glad you survived!

Thanks for eveyones kind thoughts! Boy was this a hard thing to go through, I did not sleep much last night either. I went home, fed the cat and then poured myself a couple of drinks. In my ten years working since college this is the first I have experienced such a mass lay-off at work. Probably not the last either! The final body count was 20. I say body count because it was like someone was walking through the building picking off people left and right! In minutes they were gone! 20 people in my office is a lot.I suppose I am a performer thus why I am still here...Anything you have heard about the state of Michigan is true! It really is that bad around here right now! 98ex, I work in the auto industry and call on Chrysler Corp...

That stinks, Todd! I'm glad you're safe, but as was said previously, I feel for the others. It's REALLY scary when they start canning people around you, they whacked 60 people in one day a few years ago where I work. Then had another wave or two a few days later, body count was 100 all together (this was a campus that had probably 500 folks working there at most.) It always makes you wonder "when is my number going to be up?" It sure does freak me out, I worry about everything and have this bad habit about fearing for the worst that I'm still trying to break. Hang in there! We're all in this together, tough times for us all. You never know what is going to happen with the way the economy has gone down the crapper. Good luck to you, my friend!

dude lay off suck. glad you were a lucky one! My dad has been laid of 3 times, but he is union so they find him a job or temp job. Luckily at the last job one guy retired so he was able to get his job back. That is a super scary situation when they just start picking people....reminds me of office space.

I've been on both sides of the desk when it comes to layoffs, it is a difficult time for everyone. It may be necessary, but it is tough.I hope your former colleagues find new opportunities quickly.
