So the program aired on Feburary 2 2007.And the car rolled off the assembly line the day before ?Do they give the actual cars away or do you get a Gift Certificate and pic one up from a local dealer?

While the program aired on Feb 2, 2007 it was probably taped weeks or even months earlier. He mentioned ordering the power package which he no doubt had to pay for. I did not take time to figure out what the MSRP might be. Seems like $14,800 is approaching what he can expect as this is a "used" car - best buyer would be someone nearby. [Though even at $14,800 the "reserve" is not met.] If I lived near by I would be biddiing perhaps up to $16,000.

So,how much tax would someone have to pay if they won,say a Vibe worth $16,000.I know here in Canada we don't pay any tax on items won on game shows or lotteries.

it depends on the state they're in when they win but here it would be the 6% sales tax. (ky)

The percent depends on yoru tax bracket. Thay could well be 25% for someone with a reasonably good income.Second there is self employment tax - since you had to do something to win this prize the government considers it earned income. That is 15.3% except that you get a deduction from adjusted gross income subject to income tax for half of it - inthe 25% bracket thatsi worth a 1.9% savings.Unlike most states, Florida does not have an income tax. Florida does have a sale tax - probably about 6%.So the tax is 25% + 15.3% - 1.8% + 6% = 44.4%.Also - the game show probably issues a 1099-Misc Income report equal to the MSRP of the car. You have to fight the IRS to establish that the fair market value is less than what they report. I htink you woudl win if you deducted the current rebate and the typical dealer discount. This really gets to be an issue with vacation trips as a good shopper can probably save 40% on full retail. I am not sure the eBay bid is fair market value - he won a new car, he is selling a used car.

I see the high bid was $15,400 but his reserve was higher than that. My estimate is that the MSRP with the power package is around $19,000. Take off $1,000 rebate and $1,000 discount and you can get one at the dealer for $17,000. Also - if that is the best deal you can get, unless you need a car right now and/or plan on keeping the car for ten years you are money ahead buying a 2008. IMO $15,400 was a fair price for that car. Perhaps he will end up selling it to that high bidder off eBay.

I purchased an 07 Vibe a little over a month ago from one of the local dealers. Same color and also base auto with the preferred package so I guess it is like the one listed on ebay. Sticker price was around $19000 but after haggling I picked it up for $15800 including all taxes and fees. I plan to keep it for a while so not bothered about resale value. Also I paid cash so that may have persuaded the dealer to drop the price.Same dealer was willing to let the base auto go (without any options) for $14700 including all taxes and fees.

A $19,000 MSRP '07 Vibe with power pkg for $15,800 out the door including taxes and fees - that is real good, especially since I hear the Calif sales tax is high. The only one's I have heard with those deals had GM Card rebates (or a trade-in the neglested to mention).

This sale was with no trade-in. One thing I did not mention though is that I have access to the GM discount (GMS) so this helped knock a few hundred $ off the final price. It was not a big factor in the overall price. In fact the price for the base car mentioned was with no other discounts. The dealer explained that the reason for the low price was that it was the end of the quarter and he had to sell 2 more cars to get the bonus payout from GM for meeting sales quota. But yes, here is CA taxes and fees would add upto another $1500 or thereabouts.

Wow, the 07 Vibe has the exact same interior as my 03 matrix. I thought the Vibe changed the Radio console lay out for buttons like the 05+ Matrix did?
