I think I've read a good 20 something topics and havn't found any answers to what kind of horsepower an automatic trans in the base vibe can handle... Drooling over a turbo kit now and was wondering what kind of horsepower I can push the with the auto 4 speedAny input would be great! Thanks in advance! Edit: The Transmission code is A246E if anyone has "connections"

a stock auto wouldnt last too long at low/mid boost. But if you upgrade some parts...Lancer did, to a level10 auto tranny spec. You I think can do 400hp or maybe a little more...they call them bullet proof trannies then..

Looks like there's 3 stages for Toyota transmissions...do you know what package Lancer got?

Not sure what stage he put in there? It's able to hold 500hp, but guaranteed for 300. Sorry I couldn't be more specific. I'll see if I can find out what kit he used. It's also adjustable so you can fairly easily change how hard it shifts. On a good day at 3/4 gas i can chirp the tires going into second. Yeah, you'll NEED to upgrade the auto tranny for any kind of boost. Mine only lasted a year after I installed the s/c with some other bolt- ons. You can start with an easy and cheap tranny cooler. But your looking at spending at least $3000 for the shift kit, rebuilt torque converter (got mine with a 2800rpm stall). That also includes the labor. Then again, my tranny was toast. (Just butter it up. ) It had to be rebuilt.Shop around for a good tranny shop. Might get lucky like I did. Or you can go with something like Level Ten. Just remember that you have to pay for shipping. And transmissions ain't light! It was well worth it though! I love how fast and solid it shifts. My only problem is that the stock ecu controls the shift points. So when I launch and just floor it, the first gear will bounce off the rev limiter a few times before it shifts into second (about 800rpm past my power-band also). I think only a re-flash of the ecu might fix that ($300ish).You can also try to find a XRS auto tranny. I first tried that route but it's damn hard to find a whole tranny with the harness and ecu. If you want to change to a manual (since they're easier and cheaper to maintain and build). That will cost you about $6000 for parts and LOTS of labor.Good luck!! Hope this helps a little.
