Lights off with engine on

What is the trick to running the engine in park with the headlights off? I've followed the manual steps.......With engine on in park, engage parking brake. Next, turn off engine. Next, turn engine back on. Head lights should be off, but they stay on. This would be a nice feature during cold weather when I'm waiting in my car to pick up my kids at various activities and not wanting to blast everyone with the lights. thanks

My 04 Base Auto works when I engage the parking brake 1 (or more) clicks before turning on the ignition.

That should work just fine.

I have an '06 and have the same "problem"... there does not seem to be anyway to actually turn off the headlights. I was using the power outlet the other day and wanted keep the engine running as not to strain the battery, but I didn't want to sit with my lights shining into my neighbors windows. I couldn't get them to go off either.

When the car is off, pull the e-brake. Then turn the car on and the lights will be off until you release the e-brake.

if you have a newer model ('05+) with a manual, you can't turn off the DRL's using the parking brake... You can with the automatics, but not manuals...

What I have done to cheet this feature is to buy one of those cheap LED flashlights on the tripod. I position the flashlight over the light sensor and turn it on. Most of the time this works and others it does not. Once the engine is running the lights do not come on. This works great at the drive in. The other alternative is that I cut pieces of vinyl out and glued magnets to the under side. Once I am in place at the theatre then I put the pieces over the lights. This covers the lights but not the grill. Most people like this since I back into the spots. I know that this is not for the everyday use but it is an idea.
