i tried to do something like this when i first bought the car 3 years ago...big problem. my road bike doesn't have a quick release for the seat post (and i couldn't really find one that would work with the aluminum frame without jeopardizing the frame!looks good though! my bike will NEVER ride on the roof or even worse, become my second rear bumper!

As a cyclist....that is very cool.But if I did that, I'd have to get a gear-holder for the top of the Vibe. Probably be worth it though.

That is pretty cool... Just a couple of questions:Where did you pick up the fork mounts? I've never seen just the mounts themselves anywhere. (Though, until now, I had no real reason to look!)How did you actually mount the 1x2 (at least that what it looks like) board to the tracks? Is it actually bolted into the tracks themselves (possibly damaging the tracks) or do you have them bolted into sliding fasteners inside the tracks?Anyway... thank for the post. I've been thinking about installing a receiver hitch and getting a hitch rack, but this seems like a much cheaper (and superior) option.

Thanks all for the great feedback :DI bought the fork mounts at a local Bicycle Store... the kind that only sells bikes. Any specialized store should have them.I couldn't find them at big-box "Sports"-type stores (SportChek, Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, etc), but a place like (removed)'s might have 'em. I don't really know, since we don't have (removed)'s in Canada I really didn't want to damage my car in any way, so yes, the 1x2 is screwed in to the sliding track fasteners - which makes it adjustable if you have a bigger bike. I had to buy longer screws since the factory knob-hook things definitely aren't big enough. NOTE: They are metric! M6.. I guess that's 6mm, coarse thread. Had a pretty hard time finding these, actually. The only issue is that if I want to remove the rack, I have to have a socket or wrench handy. It's not quick-release by any means... And my design binds the seats together, no 60/40. Could change that with a bit more work.

Great idea! I did something similar, only mounted the fork blocks directly to the tracks on the back of the seat - this way I can still carry a person and a bike. I used hex head screws, and leave an allen wrench in the glove box for those moments when I need to adjust the length. I'm also working on using the folk blocks as a means of securing the dog barrier...

i fully plan on doing a similar mod within this month. mine and my wifes bikes are at the inlaw's house and i am not strapping them to the roof or laying them down inside

there is a round bar, with two bike mounts on it and holders for the front tire, the bar spreads open and pumps tight neumatically and then has a key lock into position, abotut $100 but a very cool set up, made for pick ups but will work here too, I will try and find the brand name...

Excellent bike rack... but anyone that wants to do this, make sure you test fit your bike in the car first!!! My road bike doesn't have a seat post quick release... making it a royal pain to remove and re-install all the time, and it has to be torqued. Unfortunately, I have to put my bike out on a bike rack. Would much rather keep the bike inside the Vibe.
