Gear Shift Problem

I have an 06 Vibe with 35k miles, right at warranty. My gear shift has stuck in reverse 2 times already. Both times, I took it to the dealer and it didn't do it for them. Sometimes, it glides freely, sometimes it is really "sticky", and sometimes it just "locks" and gets stuck. The dealership drove it for like 2 blocks and it did nothing. They won't even take it apart to look at it. They said they couldn't take it apart unless there was a problem - that's the stupidest thing I have ever heard! They said we could leave it for a few days to let them drive it but they won't give us a loner car. We live 35 miles from the dealership and have 3 kids - we can't go without a car! Has anyone else had this problem with the gearshift? What do you do when a dealership won't work with you? I will be out of warranty the next time this happens and can't afford to pay for it.

If the problem was reported under warranty it will be covered even if the warranty is done when they finally work on it. Make sure it is documented on a bill and in their computer system. They can't take things apart every time a problem is reported, they have to experience the problem themselves. That's how it works with all manufacturers.

Hey deanna!I just bought an '07 Vibe, manual transmission. I've had the same thing happen to me a few times now in the almost 2 months that I've owned it.It seems that if I don't get the shifter right into reverse right off the bat, then it can get stuck. It freaked me out the first time it happened. I didn't get quite in to reverse and it seemed to be caught between gears. I couldn't get into 5 either. I had to do a fair bit of wiggling to get it out but was paranoid of breaking something.I have mentioned it to my sales rep and he's thinking that it could be because of all the new bits still "breaking in". I don't really buy that, but am humouring him for now. I know it doesn't count for your vehicle with it being an '06 though...For now, if I need reverse, I'm making darned sure that I have the shifter all the way over to the right and then straight down. Seems to help so far, but I am still concerned that I'll have a time where I can't focus completely on the motions.
