took a quick look under my 06 vibe to see what kind of suspension setup it has because I was thinking of buying a sway bar but all I could see was a torsion beam with some sort of black beam inside it I guess to add stiffness? Is this correct what i'm seeing and is there any aftermarket sway bar I could add onto it?

Neverenoughauto.com has a replacement for it made by Progress. The bar is thicker and gives up better handling. I just put mine on this weekend and felt alot of difference in roll.

for sure a good upgrade you can either get only the rear by progess, or a full front and rear sway bar set from hotchkis or TRD (said to be the same....but I do not know my self). neverenough should have both, rear only or the set.

i'm still not convinced that it's a sway bar, looks more like a trailing bar.

It's a sway bar unless there are a lot of confused companies making them and confused customers buying them. I'm confused, I have a progress rear sway bar.
