Why do people in the South use Ranch on cheese Pizza??? and other things!

OK I will do these in some order:1) Sorry I was thinkin about it today. When I went to visit my gf years ago when we first started dating. I would drive to GMU (George Mason) in Fairfax, VA and pay a weekend visit. Well we ordered pizza and when I got it and opened the box, a small side of ranch was there. Her friends would dive at it and start dipping a plain cheese pizza in ranhc dressing?????I stood up and was like (removed)?!?!?! Apparently pizza is so bad down there they need to do this to make it taste better. Come to New Haven, CT and ask Pepe's for ranch, he will probably choke you and kick you out. Nothing better than the mom and pop chains up here.2) How many people from the South have ever had a Portugeuse Roll (sp?) My gf used to have to bring them to school in bags in order to get them. Apparently the water down South is so hard or chemically treated or something that the bread does not rise the right way and therefore cannot make a Port. roll. I thought of this today since I have one with my cracked pepper turkey and bacon to eat, mmmmm.Anyways, not picking on the South, just curious cause I figured everyone had these rolls and get disgusted at the thought of ranch to dip a pizza in.

*barf* I've enjoyed ranch in some strange ways, such as at Burger King on the fries... I pizza very much, too much actually - but I can't say I would want to eat one with ranch if it already had regular pizza sauce on it. I have had one with a garlic-y ranch type sauce instead of the regular pizza sauce, it was ok. But no way in hell would I want to mix the two. If it's a pizza with regular sauce, the only cup of something I want to see in the box is garlic butter type stuff.

Virginia is just plain screwed up. I'll pick on people from the south, because I've lived here for 20 years and I still can't used to this place. I haven't had a decent pizza since I left Pittsburgh. Actually, I haven't had decent Italian food since I left Pittsburgh. I sure do miss perogies, too! I have to give Virginia credit for one thing, they have kick-(removed) ham.

Va is screwed up where everyone comes to DC, and then won't leave after their administration gets the boot! You have people from all over the WORLD making VA....ESP the DC area........their home.Quote, originally posted by K-NINE »Virginia is just plain screwed up. For Pizza, Lago Mar on Sandbridge Rd is great. I eat at both places every year. Back on topic, the ranch thing is finding its way into NY. A lot of the pizza places are serving it on the side. I like ranch dressing, but not with italian food.

It's funny that we are referring to VA as the "South" and it's only midway. Try like GA or Alabama... that is the south...But just to add in, I am from Michigan, and my wife is from NC, and she thought I was nuts when I first put ranch on my pizza, she never even heard of it. So it's not a north or south thing. Just a ranch lovers thing.

I still have to say it is more dominant in the South. I do consider VA to be the gateway to the south as far as I'm concerned. It's where the accents start, lol. What's funny to me is that Fairfax VA people thought they were as northern as we are up here in NY and CT. I got a good laugh outta that one. Papo'secos????? Never heard of those but I guess there the same thing. In VaBeach we used to hit the Duck right on the water. You could pull your boat right up, get off on the sand and drink on the beach out the back, what a great place!

I'm originally from NY state, but have lived in Florida for almost 40 years. Lots of transplants here, so not sure if it qualifies as the deep south. I've never seen ranch sauce served with a pizza here, although occassionally have seen it used with bread sticks. Most often they serve marinara sauce.I too have never heard of Portugese Rolls; probably a northern thing. In the south there are many places with sulfur in the water, which could account for baking issues. Although likely they simply didn't have this kind of roll in the south. One oddity I've seen out west is they serve Fry Sauce on their French fries. It's kind of like a ketchup-mayonaise mix.Bar-b-que sauce is different in some parts of the south too. I suspect each area of the country has their own special foods and sauces that are preferred. Makes life interesting doesn't it!?

I've heard of the fry sauce. There is a place in VA that had onion rings that came with this sauce that was mustard, ketchup and some other stuff mixed. It was darn good.

No it doesn't (Seriously, I saw a legitimate academic study once asking people what states were in the south and most did not consider FL to be "southern.")Anyway, I've never tried ranch on pizza, but if I do it will be with my own light ranch...the regular stuff, on top of a pizza that's already killer in calories and fat...no thanks.

I think Florida is an "exception" state. Maybe the pan-handle could be south, but once3 you get into Florida, it's a whole new world. Still a little accent, but not the south. So does this mean I am a southerner now? Cause I don't have any overalls.

Well, Florida is a pretty big state-about 800 miles from Pensacola to Miami. And, much of the panhandle, north and interior is pretty southern. Some even call the western panhandle Florabama. South Florida and the coastal areas is where the snowbirds nest. Those are the areas most people think of when they imagine what Florida is like. There are many more native Floridians now than when I first moved here. The state is very diverse in people, accents and landscape. The southern drawl is much more evident in the north. When in Miami it can sound like your in Michigan, New York or Cuba.

Ranch on pizza doesn't sound weird to me, but I sure wouldn't eat it. And I like ranch on everything. I had a friend that would dip his french fries in mayonnaise, now that is messed up.Another one of my yuk things is sugar in tea. I like my tea to taste like tea, not a soft drink.

Those are the rolls!!! lolI remember sitting at lunch at work one day and some kid was raving about how he dipped his Wendy's fries in a Frosty and thinks he should get credit for it and everyone should try it. I couldn't resist. I leaned over and said, "dude, I think Dave Thomas invented that, it's been around forever." lol!

Ya,I love those rolls. We have tons of portuguese bakeries near us,so they are fresh from the oven all the time.MMMMmmmmmm.I'm the opposite with the tea deal.I hate cream and like a little sugar, same with my coffee, just a little cream and a touch sugar, not a big fan of cream, tastes like buttermilk.YUK

My wife and I almost always order a side of mayo for our fries...yumm!When I'm at KFC, I'll get a side of ranch dressing to dip my potato wedges in. My arteries get all choked up just thinkin' about it. Hey, and you haven't lived in the South until you've had sweet tea. I mean, it's useless to put sugar in tea...just clumps at the bottom.

That's why the South will never rise again, sugar in tea. I can never order iced tea down there, and it makes me mad. Whenever I have gone down to Florida for bowl games I will eat in a restaurant and I will think maybe this time will be different. Nope their tea still sucks.Ranch dressing with fries is good. But not on pizza. And whomever started the whole blue cheese dressing with hot wings should be beaten like a rented mule. Mold and chicken do not go together.

If you order "unsweet tea" in the south, you'll get just that...unsweet tea. But "tea" by default is sweet...you just gotta specify

What is wrong with you people? Pizza should be left as pizza. It should not be defiled! If you have to put anything on it, then it's crappy pizza and shouldn't be eaten at all.

I don't know about ranch dressing on pizza, but I've got this new Southern girl working in my cubicle with me and she's pretty much awesome. She's always sending me flirty emails and giving me back rubs; I sense a sexual harassment lawsuit coming (but I'm not gonna' file it).
