Brake Pad & Shoe measurements

Local dealer sent an e-mail "10 for $10" Winter Service Special. It included a tire rotation which I was due for anyway so I jumped on that deal. Surprise - no recommended service needed - everything o.k. Even the 4 year old battery. The notes showed 8/32" (6.35mm) on the front brake pads, and 5/32" (3.967mm) on the rear shoes. However, I do not know what that means in terms of remaining life. Have 24,228 miles on this vehicle. Any insight???The work only took about 30-40 minutes. [I noted that this dealer gets $159.95 per axle for brakes - seems a little high.]
