I've heard about making my own cold air intake and saving about $200, any input on this?

I.ve seen examples made with dryer pipe etc. They may function but they usually look very ghetto and you know how hard it is to keep things from squeeking and rattling in a car. A Cosmo CAI is only about $100.00. I personally would not do it.

one person on here cut a hole in the bottom of his airbox and put a plastic hose (like a drain pipe) from the airbox to a hole he cut in the lower grille. seemed to work alright for him. I'd personally spend the $$ on a CAI

If you want to go cheap, get an ebay intake for $50+/- shipped.

Ya,homemade ones look pretty ghetto,but as MrBlue said,get a cheap ebay special,cuz making one will cost you close to the same.

I'm all for DIY projects.If an intake cost $400 or more,then maybe.But if you can get one off ebay for $50 or $108 Cosmo,and are available in different colors,you then have options that a regular working Joe or student can afford.

Are there any water inhalation problems with any of these CAIs? I know more than one Dodge Neon engine was ruined in a rainstorm. What keeps the water out? Are they really worth the cost and posible related problems? Is it the intake roar (sound) people are after?

If anyone is worried about water inhalation, there is a bypass valve made by AEM, but the only way u r gonna suck up that much water is if u r in about a foot and a half of water. But most people get get cai for the horspower gain and in regards to the water, most people with cai know to avoid the water

What a great idea!The one's on ebay are a thinner metal tube so they are a little louder than say a Cosmo or Injen. But they work just as well. They are the best bang for the buck and way better than homemade. The ebay two piece CAI is easier to work with than the one piece for installation.

I tried. The GT didn't like it. The problem is the MAF sensor placement. Gotta be perfect.Save up for a tried, true, and tested company. There's a reason some cost more than others. A lot of research goes into each company's design. Do some research and see which would work best for your needs. I love my AEM.

I did not cut a hole in the bottom of the air box, just used the one that is already there. I did cut a hole in the small grill next to the drivers side fog lamp in order to get the intake in the high pressure air in front of the bumper (ram air effect) along with cold air. Same here, and the easiest mod I've ever done, mainly because the airbox opening is 2 1/2 inch as is the hole you feed the hose through. As for looking ghetto, it isn't even noticable. You would have to look hard to see it.See the forced induction threads.

One word-GHETTO.But seriously,that is different then making a cold air intake.You just modified the stock system-DIFFERENCE.

The stock Vibe intake is a CAI, like most of todays cars have. My ScanGauge showed IAT very close to ambient temps with the stock air tube. I replaced the stock tube to gain a ram air effect in addition to CAI. IAT now is virtually identical to ambient temps, according to my ScanGauge.

Anything that provides cold air is a CAI, I just used the stock airbox so it's not even noticable, unless you pull the battery to see the hose, or crawl under the car to see the hose underneath.NOT ghetto at all!
