While the Piranha did share a lot of marketing goals and general design cues with the Vibe, the Vibe did not really come to life from that concept. Most say that the Vibe was more likely influenced from the original Aztek concept (NOT the production version):

Either way I like the "Vibe" better. Something about it is just cooler. And there is alot more things you can do with a vibe than a Pirahna

Most say that the Vibe was more likely influenced from the original Aztek concept (NOT the production version):Pontiac displayed a number of interesting "off-road sports car" type concepts before introducing the Vibe. I think one was even back in the late 1980s. Always thought they should make one. Toyota showed such a concept about five years ago.I spent some time inside GM around the time the Vibe was first being thought of. My sense is that it sprung from these concepts. Not sure if Toyota or GM first suggested the specific production vehicle. One thing to realize about the Aztek concept, and pretty much all concepts that preview soon-to-arrive production cars, is that they're designed after the production cars, not before them. The Aztek's production design was complete before they did the concept--I was inside GM's design studios at the time. I personally believe the Aztek would have sold much better if they'd introduced it with the body-color cladding and 17-inch wheels it got in it's second year. As they say, first impressions count, and people never forgot the appearance of the 2001.

The links led me to the Mazda CX-9. $40,000? That's a lot of money - even if in Canadian dollars.

Mkaresh, they should have built that concept Aztek. I am definately a fan of that one. Of course, I am a fan of the Aztek anyway.

I've been saying for years that if the Aztek had been introduced with the body color cladding they changed to in the second year, and if the 17" wheels had been standard, it would have avoided all the criticism and sold okay. With the five-spoke 17s and body-color cladding the production Aztek looks pretty good, at least to me. But by the time it was available that way the general population had already decided it was hideous.

That too but I mean if they would have released a more close to concept version. that looks prettty sweet.
