Rev limiter came on early?

Last week I was driving the wife's GT and decided to pull out onto the highway and "burn the carbon out" of the engine since I rarely drive the car. Anyway, I shift around 4k in first gear, go to 2nd and go WOT. Everything is going fine 'till around 7k rpms and it was like the rev limiter kicked in......the motor was missing horribly and wouldn't rev any further. At the next light, I turned off the defroster, fans and radio so I could listen to the engine better. I did the same thing but this time it revved all they way to redline in 2nd, hit 3rd and did the same thing ~ no problems. Why would the rev limiter kick in early just that one time? Engine too cold? Defroster on causing it?Thanks

was the engine cold? if the engine isn't warm enough the limiter will kick in.

The temp gauge wasn't all the way up to the normal spot of half, it was more like at 1/4. I guess that was it. Thanks for info, I'll let it warm up fully next time.

Engine wasn't warm enough. I do this by accident once in a while. Not from accelerating quickly but from not shifting soon enough.

Not good for the motor either. The oil takes over twice as long to get to a reasonable temp. The gauge reads coolant. That limiter is a good thing.

thanks for the post, I was wondering about it too, because I had the same problem and thought something wasn't working right.

that's the thing about these vibes...you get in and want to floor it. hahahhathe scions have a little blue light on the dash that lets you know the engine's still cold. when the light turns off, you can start racing. i prefer to just keep my eye on the temp gauge

Same for Autos somewhat, the car won't leave second gear until the oil warms up first, at least this has been my experience as I cruise to the light at the end of my road, I have gotten up to 50 without shifting but now I back off and hold 40. Usually its good to go after about 1-2min. of driving
