Well I came to genvibe yesterday and all the clickable links (edit, reply, all the smilies, etc.) are all now boxes with red x's in it....and it's still the same way no matter how many times I refresh or clear my cookies. Any ideas whats going on with my puter anyone???

I assume you have restarted your computer between now and then? If not, give that a try. Also, you might try clearing your temporary internet files. Just a couple of quick thoughts.

I would go with a complete shut down & power off, rather than a restart. What Browser and version are you using? How many applications do you have open?

I agree that you should clear out all temporary internet files and you may want to even go to the temp directory under the windows folder and clear out everything in there. I would also suggest clearing your history of previously viewed web pages.

Cathy: What Browser and version are you using? There is a patch for IE 5.5 if you have have windows 95, otherwise update your browser to IE 6. I had a similar problem that seems to have been solved with an upgrade. Visit

I agree. Upgrade to IE 6. That should fix the problem.

I've been having problems with genvibe and IE as well. Last summer I upgraded to IE 6 and lost some windows files and was unable to boot the computer. I have no idea what happened - anyway managed to get back in safe mode (couldn't get out of safe mode), backed up files onto CD and then just reformatted the whole thing. So I'm leery of upgrading to 6.0 again. My problems with IE and this site is that clicking on a topic just opens a new window, but nothing loads. I've started using Netscape for genvibe stuff.

Cathy,From the information I've been able to find, this is a common problem but nobody has a solid fix. One thing to try is to right-click on a blank portion of the we page, select encoding and make sure the check mark is next to Western European (Windows). I've not been able to duplicate this problem myself, but I'm working on it. Update: Also check this link for another potential solution...

Before I attempt this - what does it do?

quote:Before I attempt this - what does it do? Basically it reregisters a DLL file within the Windows registry. Sometimes DLL's or part of the registry become corrupt and a simple upgrade does not fix this.Related Microsoft link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... 679Another tip would be to go into the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Find the entry for Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, highlight it and click Add/Remove. When given the option, select Repair Internet Explorer. That will go through and verify all the files are correctly installed and repair them if necessary. Reboot, and try again.Hope that helps.

I don't think I'll try the repair option. Thats what happened last time when I lost everything. I really need to upgrade my OS. WinME sucks.

I didn't have much luck with the repair option personally. When IE reached a certain level of corruption, it seemed to do more harm than good.

WinME sucks.I'm not talking about the Repair for WinMe, just Internet Explorer. Now unless the Repair for IE caused WinMe to crash (not a surpirse) then I would follow your experiences. The IE Repair just checks over IE files only and just configures them to specs as to when IE was last upgraded/installed. I use this feature liberally at work and have never had a problem with this causing any general Windows problems. And of course, as millster says, if IE was corrupt to begin with.. then forget it. My basic rule of thumb for WinMe/98/95 is that a complete reformat/reinstall of the OS is necessary at least every 6 months for optimal performance.

Yes, it was a repair for IE that I tried that killed ME. I had upgraded to 6.0 and something went wrong with it after a while. So I did a search and saw this repair option and tried it. It was painful. I finally said to heck with it all and reformatted and reinstalled WinME.

Beats starting fresh each time. I've become the Ghost King at work.. but what a timesaver.

I just got done putting xp on my home computer which took the place of win2000 I had been running for a couple months. I've dabbled with Linux a couple times, but haven't quite got the hang of it yet. My wife's laptop with WinME is about to get a format and 2000 put on. It's fun, and kind of like getting a brand new computer!!! Just hope for a "good" install.Later,Carl
