Please see diagram... could the spline be extended, could a spacer be made to perhaps extend the steering wheel 1"-2" ?http://www.illformedpragma.com...n.pdf

I suppose it could be... Do not take this as a flame but why? One faint concern would be how would it hold up to a crash after the extension.

Sorry , I did not explain myself.There is a common comment regarding the steering wheel distance from the driver. In general, (and Ive read this on both Vibe/Matrix sites), many would prefer a telescoping steering wheel because the distance of the wheel is a little further away than some/many prefer.This has been observed in Corolla new car reviews and Matrix/Vibe reviews.I would prefer to pull out the steering wheel one to two inches for my comfort.Pulling the steering wheel out would be an option, but , airbag wiring should not be compromised.Here is a comment I pulled from the following new car review of 2003http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vd...ber=1"Like most manufacturers, Toyota doesn't offer a telescoping function for the steering wheel, and as this one is mounted close to the dash, several editors complained that they weren't able find an optimal driving position. Further, ostensibly to preserve legroom for rear-seat passengers, designers limited the seat-track travel. Adding to the problem for longer-legged drivers is the seat bottom that ratchets forward as you increase the seat height."

I would really have to urgently caution you against modifying the steering wheel in any way...as was said above, you don't want to screw around wtih basically what is your only control over the connection between yourself and the road. In addition, you never know how the modified system would perform in a head-on collision - at any speed.I know it's not ideal to leave it as is, but in terms of safety, that is definitely one avenue I would not advise going down...Just my $0.02.
