Laying tile

In the next few weeks I'll be putting down tile in the entry, kitchen and 2.5 baths. I have a question about putting it in the bathroom though. When I remove the toilet and put the tile down will I have to do any modifications to plumbing before putting the toilet back on? Will the bolts still have enough reach so I can tighten it down?

I always thought you were suppose to tile around the toilet and not underneath it. But what do I know, I only draw the houses not build them. lol.

Are you talking about ceramic tile or vinyl?Either way, really you should be OK. You might want to buy a "jumbo" wax seal to make sure you get enough of a seal with the flange. But your bolts should be fine. Brand new bolts are usually a good inch longer than you want them anyway and usually require cutting before the finish caps will fit.Simply put, you should be fine.

I've done it both ways. I can say this, it's a real mess when/if the wax seal fails and you just tiled around the toilet. Let's just say this, it's much easier to tell you have a leak when the water is running across the floor instead of under it.

I redid my wife's "powder" room on the main floor a couple years back and used a trick from a plumber friend and took two wax rings and molded them together to one big ring and it worked great. Tiling under the toilet makes for a very clean look. It is also a lot easier to reach the back corners with the toilet removed.I would only tile to the toilet base if I was using the 1x1 small tiles that are easy to use a crimper on.Good luckAndrew
