Cruise Control Gets Confused?

Anyone know why cruise control on even the slightest of hills will downshift two gears and just ride it out there until you are basically going downhill again? If you click it off you can still get it to shift and not need anywhere near the RPMs that it thinks you do.I swear I can hear my gas milage tanking everytime I use the cruise control.

when mines in CC and going up a hill...it might downshift but then floors it so i start going faster than what i set the CC for until i get to the top of the hill. funny to see the looks i get when i pass ppl going up hills with the loudness of the cai.

What I have done is before I get to a hill while in CC I press on the throttle and accelerate a bit. This gets me up the hill without the CC downshifting a gear. What I believe is happening is the variable valves are working harder rather than the gears. Anybody else tried this?

Yes, mine does the same type of downshift while travelling the Catskills of New York. It's a "Toyota thing" as my old Corolla stayed in the lower gears longer than I would like on Mountain runs.

I think the PCM was programmed by some engineer on a Friday afternoon and he/she wanted to leave work early. So instead of spending a little time, the following Monday, to refine the way the tranny shifts while in CC, they just said screw it, it's good enough.
